[Facts] Camille/Lucille
Does anyone know why the feminine version of Camille is pronounced ca-MEE in French and yet Lucille is pronounced lu-SEEL?Just curious.

Both are pron. cah-mee in French. Lucille can be lu-seel or lu-see.

Thanks, Claire. It wasn't until recently that I learned how Camille is pronounced in French but I was told the male version was pronounced differently. And I never heard that Lucille can be pronounced two different ways. (I certainly don't remember any of this from high school French class.) I had always assumed that Lucille was a diminutive of Lucie and had a different pronunciation. It makes sense, though, that Camille and Lucille should be pronounced similarly.

In parisian French it's typical to drop the 'l', but in Quebequois Camille is pronounced [cah-MEAL-'uh].The 'uh is almost silent, but just kind of comes about because of the ending of the l. When I lived in northern Ontario I never met a Lucille, but I would assume it's the same.
