What do you think about Jane? And what do you think about the word ‘Plain Jane’?

Overall I like Jane. It's recognizable, almost timeless, and sounds a little serious but also sweet. I do think it sounds plain but in a cute way. And I don't think the phrase "Plain Jane" should stop someone from naming their baby Jane if they want to. I like the nickname Janie but I also think it looks weird. Janie looks like it rhymes with Annie instead of Lainey. Janey is a little better with that problem but Janie still looks cuter. That said I don't like Jane enough to use it, but if I had to I would want it as a middle name with a longer first name like Wilhelmina Jane, Seraphina Jane, Amaryllis Jane, Leonie Jane, Lydia Jane, Beatrice Jane, Violet Jane, Iris Jane, Persephone Jane, Talitha Jane, etc. I also really like Joan. I think Joan is more dated than Jane but I like the vibes. It's like a more serious but also braver and maybe 'edgier' version of Jane. Joan is more 'cool' and Jane is more 'sweet and innocent' but they're both simple and fit a variety of personalities.

Yeah, Joan is great too. I agree that it has more oomph than Jane. It is edgier for sure!

Boring and not that pretty of a name, imo, though it's miles better than Jean or Joan.

Jane is okay, I'm not thrilled by it. It's used in the expression for a reason; it is the female equivalent of the average Joe. Very common, beloved name - as a first name and middle name.

I think Plain Jane suits how I feel about this name. Plain, drab, and ordinary. Every Jane I have ever met has been a perfect sweetheart, so I can’t say I dislike it.

I think Jane is simple, classic, timeless and pretty. Not plain, but reliable.

I like Jane a lot. It's bright, sweet, fresh, and quaint, not plain at all! It's a periwinkle sort of colour for me, a gentle purple-blue. It's not common where I live - I don't think I've met a single one in my life. I honestly don't know if the "plain Jane" thing would be an issue for a Jane these days. "Shrinking Violet" is another saying and it doesn't seem to hurt Violet's rising popularity at all.

My Jane friend is about as far from being plain as anyone could possibly be! Lively, beautiful, hilariously funny, and does a lot of work for charity without mentioning it.I love Jane, but since Jean is a family name on both sides, I'd have used that. I also like Joanna, but not Joan really.

Jane is Pretty and classical. A partner would have to make a real case of it for me to consider using it on a daughter as-is but I would consider it paired with a double. But only if Jane was the first name instead of the second name. (Mary-Jane just just feels too cutesy and trite to me for instance. When I was younger I was really into Jane Margaret for a while. Jane Margaret said in full. To me it makes me think of the late middle ages / Tudor era. A noble woman or a courtier.

Interesting, I actually prefer Jane to be second. I especially like Sarah Jane.

yeah Mary Jane / Sarah Jane just feels very cutesy and trite to me. Like the names of an example woman from an instruction manual from 1953.

I know someone called Jane who was born in Mauritius to a British military family. Her mum subsequently admitted that she regretted the name as she only discovered how popular it was for her daughters generation when they moved back to Britain.I like the spelling Jane a lot better than Jayne or Jain and would love to meet a little Jane but given when the name was popular I think it could be another 20 years before we see it being revived.
