[Opinions] Vivian
WDYT of Vivian for a boy? I love it, and would actually consider using it. A lot of people think of it as being too feminine, but I actually think it sounds very masculine, and is rather reminiscent of Adrian, Dorian, etc. all of which are considered male names. I like Vivien and Vivienne for girls, but love Vivian for a boy. Your opinions?Shannon

I love Vivian for a boy! It's one of my top names, and I see it as being very masculine. I'm not wild about Vivienne for a girl- for the same reason I like Francis (boy) but not Frances (girl)- simply because Vivienne and Vivian sound almost identical, and the latter is masculine to me. However, I have nothing against it as it's a legitemate feminine form. My choice for a girl would be Viviana, though; it's much more feminine, and I can't help but wish that more people would use it for their daughters and leave Vivian to the boys. :-(

Very nice!Personally I prefer the frillier Viviana or Viviane for a girl, but Vivienne's quite nice too. Vivien's nms--perhaps because it resembles Vivian so much--but it's OK for someone else's daughter. And Vivian's 100% male to me too, not the least of which is because it was originally so. You're right about its resemblance to Adrian, Dorian, and even Darian. And I'll also put it that both Oscar Wilde and Frances Hodgson Burnett had sons named Vivian (or Vivyan / Vyvyan, in Wilde's case); it was somewhat common for young boys of their era.Miranda

I can't see it on a boy. I love it for a girl spelled Vivien or Vivienne, though.

I agree, it is masculine. To me, Vivian is unambiguously masculine and Vivien(ne) feminine, just like Adrian / Adrienne.I like it. I don't think it's a big concern that some people will think it is a girlname, because it is similar enough to other male names that people can adjust to it as a male name quite easily. - chazda

I always think of this brittish comedy called the young ones. There was a charater named Vivian, he was a punk rocker. Vivian is vary cool for a boy, I wish my wife thought so

I really dislike this name for either sexes after that character on "The Young Ones". He was a male.- Kitty
