1) I prefer Max as a nickname for a longer forms, but don't see a problem with it as a full name either.
2) Maximilian, because I generally like it (i like most -ian names). My second choice would be Maxwell. Maximilianus only works if you're a Roman general, imo.

I've also seen Maxfield, Maxim, Maximiliano, Maximo and Maxton. Macsen?
