DH and I also LOVE the name Max. It's quite popular here in Australia though. We both like Max as a full name and like it's strong simplicity.

1) Max most definitely works on it's own as a full name. Not a problem at all imo.

2) Maximilian is my fave longer version of the name, but Maxwell is also great. I'd go with Maximilian, as I love the sound and feel of it and it would sound better with our ln. It is rather a long name though, ten letters!

3) Max.

I honestly don't have any other ideas for you, because I love Max, Maximilian and Maxwell, but that's it.
