I see what you mean and I think you're probably right. People must mostly use names that they've heard or read and they like.
My son's middle name is Alexander and I was surprised to see someone call it a filler middle name because it's just a name we loved. The idea of people using a name because they couldn't think of anything else didn't occur to me until I saw people calling things filler names.

I know what you mean with Caitlyn. Me and my boyfriend did the same thing with Mackenzie when we were hunting for first names for our girls. Someone suggested it and I'd never heard it before and thought it was awesome, and my boyfriend loved it best of all. I didn't even know it was trendy until people started saying how trendy and terrible it was.
