Middle name Rose
What do you think about Rose as a middle name?
I've always loved this name but since I came here lots of people have said that Rose is no good in the middle because it's a filler name.
I'm thinking a "filler name" is a name you use when you just can't think of anything else? But what if I could think of heaps of other middle names and still picked Rose because I thought it was the loveliest of all? That means it's not a filler name, right?Would you use Rose if you loved it best even though people might think it was because you couldn't find anything else?

I think Rose is a name people use as a middle name sometimes, when they can't think of anything else. So yes, it can be a filler. But if you love it and are using it because you love it, then there would be nothing filler-ish about it at all. Go for it.If I loved Rose, I would use it regardless. Done and done!

Okay, good. I've been hoping that if people chose filler names because they loved them it made them not filler names.
Thanks for replying :)

I don't find Rose particularly attractive in any position, but I do think the criticism that parents choosing a filler mn are careless or lazy is unfair. People do follow naming trends, and naming a child Jaden or Mackenzie just means they've seen other parents do the same and learnt to like it. Surely using Rose (today) or Lynn, Anne or Mary (back in the day) as a mn is much the same - other people do it successfully so it's the right thing to do and I'll do it too! That said, I'd be more likely to enjoy Rose as a fn - I know of one who's a couple of months old - or alternatively Rose as a nn for Rosemary, Rosamond etc.

"I do think the criticism that parents choosing a filler mn are careless or lazy is unfair."- isn't that the definition of a "filler name" though? A name to fill a gap. That's the impression I got but if it isn't right, would you mind very much telling me what the expression mean?I wouldn't mind Rose as a first name but to actually use myself there are other first names I like more.

I think it depends on where you, personally, stand. Parents who use, let's say, popular mns might do so to fill a perceived gap, but plenty of children get no mns at all, and the sun still rises. I find it more likely that parents choose the names they like, fns and mns. If they pick what some others consider trendy, ephemeral fns, or unimaginative mns, they wouldn't do so out of a wish to be trendy or boring - they would choose names that they've seen lots of parents use because they, themselves, like the names enough to pick them. For example: we named our first daughter Caroline. Some months later, a couple we knew slightly had a daughter and named her Caitlyn, which was beginning to take off where we live. DH heard this and turned to me with regret: 'Why didn't you tell me about that amazing name?' So, the first time he heard a fashionable name, he liked it enough to want to use it. And he is not a dedicated follower of fashion at all. He just does things sometimes that other people do!

I see what you mean and I think you're probably right. People must mostly use names that they've heard or read and they like.
My son's middle name is Alexander and I was surprised to see someone call it a filler middle name because it's just a name we loved. The idea of people using a name because they couldn't think of anything else didn't occur to me until I saw people calling things filler names.I know what you mean with Caitlyn. Me and my boyfriend did the same thing with Mackenzie when we were hunting for first names for our girls. Someone suggested it and I'd never heard it before and thought it was awesome, and my boyfriend loved it best of all. I didn't even know it was trendy until people started saying how trendy and terrible it was.Just for the record, I like Caroline over Caitlyn any day. Thanks for explaining :) I think we probably will end up going with Rose.

I am pretty sure most middle names we condemn as "filler" are chosen because the parents actually think they are lovely. I can't think of a single example of someone with a very common middle name telling me that their parents "just couldn't think of anything else".Use Rose if you love it.

That does make sense, but I guess I thought that was the definition of a "filler name". Like the way people use it I kind of got the impression they were saying these certain names (Rose, Grace, Lynn, etc) were just names to fill a gap. Thanks :)

I think if you love the name Rose that much, then use it. It does fit so perfectly with so many names and even though a lot of people use it, it's a pretty name.

It does fit perfectly and I think that must be one of the reasons why so many people use it. Grace, too. Though Grace I love as a first name more :)

Rose is a fine middle name. I'd use it if I liked it regardless if I could think of a hundred other names to use. I wouldn't care if other people on a message board thought it was a filler name; in real life people don't say that to each other much anyway.

That's true.
In real life people are mostly just like "oh cute!" or whatever. Plus in real life, almost no one would know her middle name anyway.

If I loved it, I would use it no matter the hype. However, it is a very common middle name. I honestly prefer it as a first since it is so lovely. But, I also love it as a middle for unisex names... to frill them up. Arden Rose, Charlie Rose, Taylor Rose, Evren Rose, Meredith Rose, etc... Takes the guesswork out of the baby's gender.
Rose is lovely to me... but I personally prefer Rosalind or Rosine. Even Rosemary is sweet still.

I wouldn't mind it up front either, though there are other first names that I like more than Rose.
Grace though, Grace is a common middlename now and I'm always extra happy to see that up front.Wow, Charlie Rose is so cool! She'd have to be Charlie Rose everyday, and not just Charlie xD I couldn't resist it. Rosine is gorgeous :)

If you love Rose, then it's not filler. I would use names I like regardless of their popularity or public perception because I like them and since I'm the one choosing, I'm the one that that matters.

I hoped that would be true! That if I love it it's not filler.
That's what my boyfriend says, that it doesn't really matter if the name is popular or whatever. I guess I just wouldn't want people to think I hadn't really thought about my kid's name.
