Well, I would have a hard time believing that Mackenzie was the name of teh grandmother - unless it was her last name. Mackenzie was barely in use in the 50s to 70s (which would be grandmother age right now)... and only came into popularity starting in the 80s. I could believe that the mother was named Mackenzie... but for a story I would pick a name that has a bit more feeling.
As a surname, Mackenzie is totaly believable.
All of that matters little (in my opinion) since the Grandfather would likely choose a significant first name like you suggested. It would not me Mary-Sueish at all... since it would be almost expected. So - virtue names would work here for sure.
What might be a little more emotional and cute would be a nickname that the nurses used because the Grandfather was so upset and didn't name her right away. Then he decided to either use a variation of the nickname as her full name (and still call her by the nickname) or just named her the nickname.
My suggestion would be Brighty, which can be on its own (I know one) or a nickname for Bridget.
Maybe she has a bright smile or bright blue eyes that capture the hearts of the nurses and her Grandfather despite the situation.

First off, thank you. The idea abut the nurses giving her a nickname was a great idea. I need to still figure out what it is and all since they would figure out a name like Lily or Lucy (something short and sweet). Anyway, it's helpful.
BTW, the story takes place a few decade in the future, so that's why Mackenzie could've been the grandma's name.

So I thought of a name and I wanted your opinion on it. I was thinking that she could've had the nickname Jem because she had these blue eyes that made her stand out despite being red (because she was a premature baby). Then her name be Jemma.
By the way, I have a terrible memory. So, please remind me, did you think I should have her middle name be her mother's? (Jemma Alicia)

I like that idea... though I would likely use Gemma (Gem) instead. But my Italian-ness dictates that change.

Alicia was pretty popular in the 80s and 90s so it would work on a woman having babies now... but if this is a couple of decades from now - I might go with something that is mainstream at the moment.
Alexis, Alyssa, and Alexandra are all similar and currently in the top 100.
