Delta
DeltaI'm just now coming around to this name and am suddenly finding it quite pretty. Seems like it has a lot of baggage though. What are your thoughts? photo image_zps50478a13.jpg

Baggage is making me smile because when I think of Delta the first thing that always pops into my head is Delta Air Lines.
Second thing that pops into my head is river delta.
Third thing is the name.
Fourth is the letter. ;)
Fifth is the term "dealt a" card or hand.
I have no other Delta associations that come to mind readily. None of these are bad associations to have so Delta is usable imo.

"Delta Dawn" I just hear the twangy southern tune

I actually love it but more in a GP sort of way. I doubt I would ever use it (at least as a first name).

It's just another letter in just another alphabet. I find letter names insipid and silly in English - Dee, Kay, Elle - and using a Greek one which doesn't start with a d- sound in Greek and which indicates an unsuccessful test result and a wide river mouth system gives it too much baggage for not much of a return.

It doesn't sound bad, but also seems very Southern, so it would never be for me personally. Delta Burke and the Mississippi delta and all that. Yes, a lot of baggage.

Delta Air Lines comes to mind straight away. I wouldn't consider it for a name. It's too closely tied to the company for me.

Is the baggage related to Delta Burke, or the Delta blues?I like it though. It has warmth and pizzazz. I like the twang it has.

i was mostly thinking Delta airline, and the greek row/sorority association

Ohhh I see. Sororities and stuff aren't really a thing where I'm from, so I didn't even think of that!So no baggage for me with Delta :) The more I think about it, the more I like it. How would you combo it? It's a rich golden colour for me, so I really want to link it with something starting with a C...

I tend to like pairing D names with M middle names. It's all blue to me. Delta Mary is coming to mind- sort of quaint and unassuming. I'm open to suggestions though if they come a'burstin out of you ;)

Delta Mary is adorable. So quaint! Some things that spring to mind for me:Delta Catherine
Delta Constance? Delta Constanze
Delta Christine
Delta Clementine
Delta Cecily
Delta Carmen
Delta Casey
Delta Celeste
Delta Charmaine (SO TACKY I love it)
Delta Clare
Delta Cleo
Delta Colleen
Delta Coralie
Delta Corrine, Delta Corinneok this is turning into a Tennessee Williams play so now I'm gonna stop

I'm with you on the Cs. I heard Delta Caroline right off the hop. But Delta Constance is cute too.

It's pretty homely, if you ask me. No particular charm unless your middle name is Dawn and you wander around town pining for the man who got away.

I thought of the song, too. But Tanya Tucker isn't popular now, so most wouldn't think of it.

I really like Delta! It's exotic and mysterious. I always think of the South too which is a bonus. ;-) I don't see it as having a lot of baggage. It's no different than any other Southern name such as Magnolia or Carolina. I do know a woman who named her dd Dixianna (nn Dixie) and I think that's a bit much. I definitely wouldn't go there.

By baggage I mostly meant that it's the name of an airline, and a Greek letter used frequently in sororities

Ah, I was approaching this from a strictly Southern perspective. :-) The other associations still don't bother me, though.

Nope. It's a letter, even if it is heavily anglicized and the pronunciation is mangled. To me that's like naming your kid "A" (Ay) or "F" (Eff). And beyond that, it's just not an appealing sound. Plus, river deltas.

But no different than calling your daughter Bea, even if it's only a nickname. And I see the river delta thing as a positive, not a negative

I'm Greek, so delta's not just a theoretical letter that sometimes pops up in math and science like it is for some people. And I would never name a kid Bea. I don't know, I just don't like it as a name. It's really nms and feels wrong to me, and that's all I can say.
