Co-worker's son
A co-worker of mine has a toddler son, which I've known for a while, but I just recently found out what his name is.
Orion.
What do you think? I think it's kind of cool, but I also think it's a little too "out there" for me to ever use.
ETA: After I'd written the above, I checked out its popularity statistics, and saw that while it's still not what you can call popular, it's risen a lot, so maybe it will stop seeming "out there" to me, some day.
This same co-worker told me that she had planned on Piper if she'd had a girl, one reason being "you don't hear it much." So I gave my speech on the SSA yearly list and how it's easy not to know what's popular or is becoming popular.
Orion.

I really like it.
I like it but I don't think I would seriously use it.
Sure, it's kinda cool but also a bit silly and might lead to teasing.
Heh, there's a teacher at my kids' school who has a son named Orion. He's 11.
I've run across several Orions actually. So yeah, kinda popular!
To me it's like the logical next version of Brian & Ryan, and it sounds just like O'Ryan... these things really make it far namier than something like Sirius or Jupiter. Just like Andrea makes Andromeda namey. So I don't think it's really as far out there as it might seem.
Personally what I like about it is the heroic vibe, and the references to bowhunting, mythology, and astronomy.
Piper is so bad. Maybe you've saved a future woman from being named it. Nice going.

I like star names. I really like them. Orion has a familiar feeling, but it is just a touch different. I like it.
I like it. I don't really think it's too out there given it's similar sound to Ryan.
I know two Orions. One in his late forties, and one in his early twenties. I don't really like it, it kind of has a pretentious feel - but maybe that's just because of the ones I know!
I don't mind Orion. It has risen a lot and maybe that's why it doesn't seem too out there to me. It's more that I kind of like the sound but not really the mythological aspect. That's not a group of names that really gets me excited, typically.
How was your speech received? How does it generally go over?

She didn't have much of a reaction. Just nodded.
