I love Shepherd and Shep. The only other way I can see it working as a NN is maybe a contraction of a first and middle name like,
Sean
Paul
, or
Shane
Peter
or something of the like.

True, I do enjoy a first name middle name pairing to make nicknames. So that would be up my alley.
