Gem
Not Gemma, just Gem. Yes, I know this was the name of a rock star doll/cartoon character from the 80's, even though she spelled it Jem. Anyway, what do you think of the name? Usable? What would you pair it with? Does it work better as a middle name? "An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way." -Charles Bukowski

I was literally named after Jem and the Holograms (Jerrica) and my mum calls me Jem so I'm obviously used to it as a girls name lol.
I think that if you use Gem as an actual first name you would want to pair it with a longer middle name (or perhaps your last name is long. Some suggestions are:Gem Arianna
Gem Aubrey
Gem Avery
Gem Elizabeth
Gem Imogen

I LOVE Gem, just Gem. I feel like it's too, I dunno, commercial, or self conscious, or something, on it's own. So Im constantly trying to come up with ways to use it as a NN. My favorite currently is Jane- Emily "Jem," but I still like Gem better. It's glamourous but earthy and to-the-point. I think if I were to witness it in real life (on a person, because I've seen it on 2 dogs) I'd be more inclined to take it more seriously. I feel like my last inquisitions of this name my have tainted my view to the negative side. No one ever seemed to love it as much as I did :(

Gem (or Jem) sounds like a boys name to me. I can't really imagine it on a girl. But I might get used to it. Possible combinations:Gem Harriet
Gem Nicola
Gem Lucia
Gem Annamaria

I think it works. It seems like a valid nature name to me along the lines of Ruby or Opal. The spelling Jem would make me assume male, so I prefer Gem to Jem for a female. It would also work as a middle name! But I really think it's usable as a first.Gem Adelaide
Gem Elizabeth
Gem Katrine

Usable. I worked with someone called Gem once. Hers was actually short for Gemini - one of the more unusual names I've come across - but she was always called Gem. I just had a look at stats here for it and it's been used more on boys than girls, but it seems fairly unisex to me:
Gem Alexandra
Gem Rebecca
Gem Lucy
Charlotte Gem
Frances Gem
Marianne Gem

Oooo Charlotte is normally so ho-hum to me but it goes so perfectly with Gem!!! Charlotte Gem, Gem Charlotte... I adore both. Velvet and jewels

I like lots of single-syllable names in the first slot, but I enjoy them paired with longer-syllable middles and surnames. Gem Smithington sounds much better to me than does Gem Smith so, for a short surname, I would put it in the middle slot unless I loved it more than any other name and couldn't stand not to use it.As for Gem itself, I think it's alright. It doesn't feel near as nicknamish to me as would Jen. I think that must be because it's also a word; I pick up both "nature" and sort of abstract "virtue" associations ("she's a real gem"). The rock star doll/show only barely registers on my flashback radar, and only because you mention it.Gem Cordelia
Gem Timothea
Gem Antonia
Gem Eudora
Gem Winifred
Gem Raphaelle / Raphaela
Gem Paulina
Gem Helena
Gem Felicity
Gem Dorothea
Gem Catriona
Gem Audrea
Gem Alexandra

I prefer Gemma, but it's because the Swedish word gem means paper clip (although then it sounds more like "game").
I prefer Gem as a nn for Gemma. Maybe it could work as a middle name, too.

It's alright for a middle name. For a first name, I don't hate it with a passion but I'm not sure if I like it or not.As a middle name, Gem can work (for me) with:
Marion Gem
Laurie Gem
Anna Gem
Lora Gem
Tamaki Gem -> one meaning of Tamaki is 'precious gem' (珠貴) from 珠 "gem, jewel, peark" & 貴 "esteem, honour, precious, prize, value", so it can work because of the similarity of meanings on both names. As a first name, it can work with:
Gem Andrea
Gem Lianne
Gem Louise
Gem Ophelia
Gem Tristine

Usable (my definition of usable is really really broad, though).
I don't like it as it feels pretty tacky to me.
Definitely better as a middle name. If I had to:
Mattea Gem
Yolanda Gem
Juniper Gem
Camilla Gem
Gem Alessandra
Gem Josephine
Gem Aviva

I like for a middle name! It seems a little lacking as a first name but I think it would make for a cool middle name. I'm kind of digging Margot Gem, and I don't like Margot that much. Or Caroline Gem.

No reason why not, really.People are called Jewell. I went to school with a girl named Jewell. Perhaps best as a middle name, but could be a first name. Gem Danielle.
Gem Suzanne.
