I like lots of single-syllable names in the first slot, but I enjoy them paired with longer-syllable middles and surnames. Gem Smithington sounds much better to me than does Gem Smith so, for a short surname, I would put it in the middle slot unless I loved it more than any other name and couldn't stand not to use it.As for Gem itself, I think it's alright. It doesn't feel near as nicknamish to me as would Jen. I think that must be because it's also a word; I pick up both "nature" and sort of abstract "virtue" associations ("she's a real gem"). The rock star doll/show only barely registers on my flashback radar, and only because you mention it.Gem Cordelia
