Question - not right or wrong answer-merely "Vibes"
in reply to a message by Caprice
I love literary heritage - especially through names. I think of Lucretia as a victim of rape (Shakespeare's Rape of Lucretia); however I know of no other common association. Are there other stories that might taint her name with wrong, sin, or, ominous traits? There is no right or wrong answer: I am merely curious to learn other meanings that I do not know. Thanks!

In the film adaptation, Lolita was depicted as a seductress.
Rape victims are the classic example of "blame the victim". For centuries women have been blamed for causing their rapes, and unfortunately this still happens today. "Good girls" don't get raped. The girl /woman "must have been asking for it". Blegh.

No, no, no for God's sake!
I was thinking about Lucretia Borgia! I would NEVER EVER blame a victim! For God's sake what are you thinking of me!?!?

Nothing about you in particular, or that you were thinking about any of it consciously. It's more of an unconscious cultural thing. You are hardly alone in thinking that Lolita has "bad girl" vibes, even though the original character was a victim. I've felt that way about the name myself. I get the knee jerk "bad girl" gut feeling about it, due to cultural associations I've seen, and then I have to remind myself that she was actually a victim of terrible abuse.

I am guessing Lucretia Borgia?
Thank YOU!
I've never learned or heard of her; I just googled her - and she seems quite interesting.
