Oscar
not sure whether i like it or not. it sounds handsome but also really funny and geeky? maybe that's just because of the cartoons i grew up with where i first heard the name. the meaning otherwise is lovely, and i'm a fan of Oscar Wilde. wdyt? what combos would you put it in? any nicknames possible?

I really like Oscar! There's always something holding me back from putting at the top of my list, however and I do prefer Oskar to Oscar.

One of my fave male names and has been for years. Such a handsome name.

Around here, it's really common among Latino men of a certain age, so it has those connotations for me. Oscar isn't a bad name at all and is perfectly usable, but in my head it's kind of filed in the "middle aged man's name" category.

I love Oscar! It's a little geeky, but sophisticated geeky. Haha

I love Oscar. I think it sounds handsome and also sort of geeky, but not in a bad way. What else to say about it! I like that it's a name of Irish origin that has come into widespread use. I like that it has such widespread use in general - it seems to be well used throughout Europe and Latin America. I agree that the "deer friend" meaning is lovely - not as big a fan of the "god spear" one but eh, what can you do. I think Oscar Wilde, despite his misfortunes, is still a pretty good namesake. I also think that association makes this name seem more dignified/formal, instead of languishing in the "goofy and unusable" bucket with the likes of Grover and Kermit. (Although secretly I really like Grover as well).

It does sound geeky to me, and it also sounds coarse/outdoorsy/old-fashioned...I get a similar vibe from Grover, though Oscar is more modern/common.When I was a kid, I associated it with the Oscar Mayer Weiner song and Oscar the Grouch (who I quite liked, so it wasn't a negative association, necessarily). Now I associate it more with Oscar Wilde, Oscar Isaac, and kids I know of named Oscar.Oscar Emeric
Oscar Amedee
Oscar Ambrose
Oscar Anthony
Oscar Malachi
Oscar Gabriel
Oscar Dmitri
Oscar Damien
Oscar Daniel
Oscar Lewis
Oscar Myron
Oscar Myles
Oscar Sullivan
Oscar Judah
Oscar Joseph
Oscar Julian
Oscar Timaeus
Oscar Emanuel
Oscar Elliot
Oscar Isaac :)I'd use Oz if I wanted a NN for it.Eta: I forgot about the Oscars (Academy Awards)...that association might add some glamour to it.

I can't care for it. I can only think of Oscar the Grouch and Oscar Madison. For some reason, Oscar Wilde never comes to mind when I see or hear the name. I agree it's funny and geeky, but I fail to see any handsomeness. I can't think of any nicknames, and I don't see why a nickname would be necessary. Oscar is only two syllables and it trips right off the tongue.I'm not sure that Oscar Wilde is a great namesake. Yes, he was talented and brilliant, but he also suffered persecution for his homosexuality and died destitute at age 46. Not saying he was a bad guy, at all, just that when I think of him it brings sadness.

nicknames for me aren't so much for length or simplicity, but more for terms of endearment. especially since Oscar can sound overly formal to some people. that's a good point though about Oscar Wilde. it's very important i think that his story be known, but perhaps not by being named after him. thanks for pointing that out.
