Perhaps ANNEZA would be of more help...
in this area since she's our Germanic languages guru. At least she was 2 years ago when I was frequently on this board, and she's still here. The "Goth origins" stuff I posted from memory, but even several different Googles didn't yield anything definitive on the meaning of the Got- root word. Anneza...?

Nothing much, Mike. Older, balder, grayer, and now semi-retired doing some consulting. Still have one college kid at home (The Thing That Wouldn't Leave). Had some rough patches health-wise (including the Big C) over the past year, while spending most of my "up" time living out of a suitcase for the company. Both are behind me, thankfully.Hope you and your family (Barb, Barry, etc.) are doing well. Nanaea been around lately?Dave

Congrats on the (semi-)retirement! My dad is in the same situation, retired but still picking up some contract work. My mom continues to work in the library. They're casually looking for a new house. Brother has just made it into grad school. As for my news, it's summed up here: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=213556&board=otI'm glad to hear your health problems are past you. That's scary stuff.Nanaea hasn't been around, but Pavlos pops in now and then. Phyllis and Sarahjeanne make occasional appearances on the "Lounge" message board.

Blushing as she tries on her guru hat!I've got a faint memory that the Got bit means - surprise, surprise! - people, men, The Real Humans (as opposed to that silly tribe across the river who can't even speak decent Gothic ...). This is pretty standard, of course - in really ancient times people would tend to call themselves The Real People or The Free People, never dreaming that everyone else was doing the same ...And I also seem to think that the H wasn't in their original name. Gottic architecture, anyone?

Attn:- "Guru Anneza"Thank you, although i kind of expected something more interesting! than "the real humans"!Do you know of a tribe called "The Wends", if so can you help with an explanation of their name? The other thing i wish to ask is can you recommend any other sites or books that provide information on Germanic names, circa 700 - 1100ad? I keep getting stuck on the single element name, often i can find the word which is the basis for the name but then understanding how this term was applied as a name is difficult. Any ideas of where to go??? regards Mark C.
