I'm Swedish, and I've never heard Aya. Maja and Mia are the most common nicknames for Maria and Marie.

Hi Champagne,Aya is not a Swedish name. There's a Swedish name Aja which is a Swedish pet form for Maria (and some other names as well).Regards, Satu

Aya IS in the database as a Japanese female name meaning "woven silk".I'm not sure about the other etymological origins you listed. And I don't remember an Aya being in the Bible, although admittedly I didn't read the book very closely.Miranda
