Meaning & History
Latvian name of uncertain origin, associated with the verb aijāt meaning "to rock, lull" and the word aijas "cradle". It originated in the early 20th century, at the same time many other Latvian names were coined.
It was used by the Latvian writer Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš for the title character of his novel Aija (1911).
