Means "the exalted". Laqab of Ala 1. This was the personal name of Abu Sa'd al-'Ala' ibn Sahl (c. 940–1000), a Muslim mathematician, physicist and optics engineer. Ibn Sahl is credited with first discovering the law of refraction, and used it to create anaclastic lenses.
