Judging by the steady increase in popularity, in conjunction with the years, it seems as though it is a direct realtion the the character ANYA from tv's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Personally, after Willow, she was my favorite female character on the show. It is a beautifully exotic sounding name. Her full name on the show was ANYANKA, ans she was a vengeance demon-turned-human.
His name is Anoup. My name is Priya. If I have a baby girl I will name her ANYA. His first two words and my last two. Saw the meaning "Gracious" in Russian. The very mentioning of the name makes my lips curve to a heartfelt smile.
I think it's funny that people assume (because of Buffy) that Anya is a nickname for Anyanka. It would actually be the other way around. Anyanka would be a Russian pet form of Anya.

Anya Seton (1904-1990) was an excellent author of historical novels during the period 1941-1975. All of her books were bestsellers. She was christened Ann but adopted Anya as her pen name.
Anya is a pretty name. I know it is a form of Anna. I also feel that it could still be used to honor Tanya or Tonya. I think that would be a cute way to honor those other names as well.

My name's Anna and I go by Anya about half the time. I think it's very sweet and would be lovely as a given name. I love that it works in many different languages.
Anya is my name, and I have always loved it! It is soft, easy to say, and not too long. Although, some people do have trouble pronouncing it; I get called 'AW-nya' a lot.
Anya is a young woman residing in Harrogath (Act V, the special added-on act) in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. She identifies items in Cain's place and will sell unidentified items. After beating the Act, she will personalize a weapon with the player's name.
