Meaning & History

Diminutive of Corneel as well as of the related names Cornelis and Cornelius (for men) and Cornelia (for women).

This name is only used informally, meaning: so far it has not been used as an official name on birth certificates. It is also rather old-fashioned and one is more likely to encounter it in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium) than in the Netherlands, because the diminutive suffix -ke is used more often there than in the Netherlands, where the diminutive suffix -je is generally preferred (as such, see Corneeltje).
