Meaning & History

Means "dragonborn" in the fiction ancient Dragon Language of the dragons in Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls game series. The player-created protagonist of the fifth game in the series, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, goes by the epithet Dovahkiin. Within the game's mythology, a dovahkiin is a mortal man or woman born with the soul of a dragon and thus enabled with the dragons' ability to absorb a slain dragon's soul and, with the soul, knowledge of the thu'um (words of power in the Dragon Language that allow for various effects, such as breathing fire or ice for example).

Game studio Bethesda offered a prize -a Steam key that grants every ZeniMax/Bethesda game free, for life- to anyone who named their child born 11/11/11 (the release date of 'The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim') Dovahkiin. Megan and Eric Kellermeyer won the contest after naming their son, born on 11/11/11, Dovahkiin Tom Kellermeyer.
