You can't go wrong with a timeless, kingly classic like George. It ages beautifully and has truly withstood the test of time.
I had a great great grandfather named George. Curiously enough, no one has ever used the name George since his passing in the 1930s. I personally think that maybe it is time for a change and someone within my immediate family can use this name again if they are looking for inspiration whenever choosing a baby name. (Shrug) :)
Dull but handsome.
A very strong, distinguished classic that would stand out from all the 'youneek' names of the modern day.
I have always liked this name since as far back as I can remember. Being an avid history reader, I know quite a lot about the illustrious personages who went by this name. Most notable among them would include George Washington, first American president of the USA. Then in the UK you have at least six monarchs who went by the title name of George. All in all I think it is a solid, down to earth name that still holds up in the modern world.
Never liked this name since childhood. Sounds unattractive. Plus George W Bush was a p0tat0 :/
The name George is a splendid name that is mature, classy and, dare I say, timeless.
My cousin, who is thirteen years old, has this name. He tells me, whenever we chat online, that being the only George in a sea of Ajax, Jakes, Jacks and other “strange” names makes him feel unique. I personally think it is ok and certainly not outdated like other names that were and are “cr3@tive”. Those type of names shall be here today and gone tomorrow. Cheers!
Most outdated name ever, very associated with George Washington.
George iś a very classy and dignified name that is most certainly not “clunky”. Dare I also mention that quite a few illustrious personages have retained this name and have went on to live very notable lives.
Too clunky with two harsh, unpleasant "G" sounds.
Like the name "John", George is timeless and spiffy.
I think this name is quite handsome and does age well considering that it crosses generations.
I don’t like this name. It’s so old, ugly and boring. I can’t picture this name on a baby or a kid today, it is too old fashioned. It also sounds like a naughty boy name.
This is what I would like to name my son, after one of my favorite relatives. A strong name which holds great respect. It will grow well on your child.
This is an old grandpa's name.
Nope, this name is old and terrible for modern life.
George Washington is amazing, George Bush is terrible.
WAYYYY too dated.
I am GEORGE, masculine, looking for a feminine Georgi, Georgin, Georgian, Georgia and many more because they are so awesome.
I love the name George for a boy. I think it’s so soft and sweet and works well for all ages.
Reminds me of George Pig from Peppa Pig and Curious George, but it's harsh sounding in my opinion.
A strong, timeless and classic name.
I never really liked the name George, but I do now considering I love GeorgeNotFound. Nice name, not for like a 2 year old though.
Nice name.
George is an ok name. Just a bit too common from where I live.
I think George goes well on an old person or little girl. But not on a modern day guy! Just NO! :(
George is not a gender specific name. It goes well for both genders regardless of what the naysayers proclaim. When I give birth to my daughter next month I will name her George.
George has nothing spectacular about it. I don't know who would like such an unimaginative moniker like this one. If I had this as my first name I would change it in a heart beat!
Yuck! I hate the name George! It sounds so gross and reminds me of some creepy old guy that scares people!
My name is George and I am a trans-female. Like one of the comments below said that George is a great unisex name that goes well for both genders. All names are gender fluid and that's that.
Not a bad choice. A good classic at that. George Harrison is a great namesake. I hope people aren’t actually naming their daughters George and just keeping it as a nickname for Georgia, Georgiana, or something.
I like George for a girl and think it would be a perfect unisex name. :)
Yawn...dull name with a dull meaning that puts me to sleep.
This is my name. Whenever I am introduced to a group, choruses of inevitable "Georgie's" and George of the Jungle echo around the room. It's easy to remember, which is nice.
A classic, not bad at all.
George is an amazing name.
I hate the name George. It’s ugly, old, clunky and overused, especially in the UK. I can no longer imagine a baby named George. It reminds me of George Pig from Peppa Pig.
I can't look at a baby and think that it should be named George, it's such an old name and I can't see it as a little kid's name.
This is my name. When I was in day school, I kinda disliked it a lot. However, now that I am in my late sixties, I have come to appreciate the way in which my name aged well with me as I got older.
Whenever I hear the name George, there are two things that come to mind. Curious George and George of the Jungle. That and comedy legend George Carlin.
George has always been a family name so I personally think it is ok.
Common, overused and boring.
I think George is a very decent name. Being a history buff and living here in the UK, I always associate this name with numerous monarchs of our history. A very charming and regal forename in my humble opinion. :)
It isn’t bad. Nothing negative or positive about it. Reminds me of George Harrison, Curious George, and George Floyd.
I love the name George / Georgie and Geordie.
I would love to be friends with GeorgeNotFound.
I was named after my father, I'm the fourth generation, and my name is William. I asked my mom what she would've named me if I didn't have my name. George is a name she thinks is funny. She says George. I don't care for the name George, and I'm glad I have my name. However, my name is horrible. I love William, but my middle and last don't work. Have I thought of changing it? Yes. However, it's God's job to change my name once I arrive in Heaven, and my father would be hurt if I did. I wouldn't want that. Hey, at least I don't have to give my son my name. I've come to terms with my name, and think it's really cool that I'm the fourth, but I hate my middle and last name with my first name. It's pretty much an insult. I'd give it to you, but for security reasons I won't.
I'm not a fan of it even though I am from England, it sounds a bit weak in my opinion, but I did know a lad who's formal name was Georgie, which is even worse.
George is a wonderful, classic name that will fit the bearer at any stage of his life. I hope people aren't actually using it for girls. Names like Georgia, Georgie, Georgine, and Georgina are wonderful for a girl ;)
I personally think this is a wonderful, classic name that could suit any male and while it is a bit hard to see on children, that isn't really a problem as we all grow up eventually and are children for very little of our lives.
Not sure why but I have always liked this classic name as I think it will age well from boyhood to manhood and it isn't difficult to spell. A win win situation for both parents and kid.
The comment below asserts, rather absurdly, that the name "George" would be better suited on a girl.
Nothing could be any further from reality as this name has been carried by many a good kings, princes and prominent politicians who so happen to be men. George is a boy's name and NOT I repeat NOT a girl's name under any circumstance.
George was my great-grandpa's name, and I've always been fond of it. Because I'm a synaesthete I see it as I see the letter G, a lovely rich yellowy pale orange. I think the commenters on here who despise its meaning, "earth worker", are being very silly - earth workers and agriculturalists have always been of vital importance to our planet, and no less so in these times of pollution, species extinction, famines and alleged global warning.
Those who commented that George is an old man's name heading for oblivion reckoned without the Prince George Factor.
And those who claim to have never seen an attractive George have obviously never seen George Clooney or George Harrison!
Suitable for short, stocky, bespectacled bald men.
First impression is I’ve never met an attractive George.
Sorry to everyone on here who thinks George should only be used for girls, but it’s simply not a feminine name! George is a really noble name for a BOY. There are some male names that are acceptable to use on females, but George is strictly a man's name. If you really love the sound of George for a girl, then try the feminine variants. Georgia is a nice name for a girl. If George was a unisex name a long time ago, it would be a different story.
Masculine but rough and hillbilly to me.
For everyone saying George can also be a feminine name, that's your opinion. It’s cute you want to be unique. George kinda does sound a bit girly but it’s far more masculine in my opinion. George is a strong and handsome name and I personally prefer it for a boy. For a girl, I would choose Georgia or Georgine, there are a lot more feminine forms of George. Though I don’t really hate the name on a girl if I were to give the name George to a baby, I would give it to a boy, but never a girl. I absolutely respect the boy name on girl trend, but I love traditional feminine names like Julia as well. The way I see it, any name can work for a girl, though a lot of names would be reconsidered for a boy, because naming a girl Alexander would be more acceptable than naming a boy Alexandra, but I’m not a feminist or sexist. I talk about boys and girls, not just my typical gender.
I don't care about whether a name is common or not. George reminds me of not only kings (which obviously from my list is from royalty) but also writers and artists. It has this simplistic sound and is just straight to the point with a lot of associations, one of them is Washington who had an amazing character and is one of our greatest presidents. My favorite aspect of this name is no nicknames personally. George Lucas would be his name.
Meh. Boring, plain, and overused. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be very popular nowadays.
Oddly, I always think of George from "It's a Wonderful Life" when I hear this name, but that's not a bad thing, because I like that character. George is a masculine, handsome, classic name that seems to never truly go out of style. It fits all kinds of men and age groups well. I'm still debating on whether to name my son Theodore or George, but I'm leaning towards George.
I always felt funny about the name because of Curious George, but ever since I got to see little Prince George of Cambridge I adore it! People really make names!
Bush Jr. Ruins it for me, but I like Georgy because of Georgy Zhukov and most people don't consider Georgy American.
This is an okay name, it's just too old fashioned. There are some famous George's like George Washington, George Bush, George Harrison and of course George of the jungle! It's not a bad name, just some people would think it's nerdy nowadays.
George is a name I really like. I also like Georgina (The feminine version). George Bush Jr. doesn't ruin the name for me as I think of George Washington or George Harrison. I named the main character in my comic George.
I always associate the name with a 110 year old man, in brown musky trousers, suspenders, who is 15 years over due of croaking. The name is ancient and has an ancient, boring, almost creepy ring to it. Even when George dies, he still doesn't know to leave...he lingers around graveyards and haunts the local rundown farm where he spies on the living. On exciting days, he picks onions and beets out of the garden that he places in a wooden bowl, on his red and white vintage checkered table cloth that matches his curtains that his great great grandmother passed down to him. He attends church 3 days a week, only because it's connected to the cemetery where he lives...10th row back, 16th tombstone down to the left, under the oak tree. The name is okay if you are a royal, they are expected to carry down names that are 800 centuries old.
Sounds too rough and heavy.
My name is George, and I'm the 8th generation in my family. George was a name used a long time ago, and I am proud to bear that name.
Easy to say, to the point.
I used to not care for the name as it sounded like one that would belong to an elderly man. Then I met my (now husband), George. 28 years old. My opinion of this name changed overnight as I now saw it as different than other men his age & he was the only George I've ever known other than the elderly at church. Strange enough because it is not common for men his age I began to relate that name to a down to Earth, strong, laid back, funny, & a very sexy name.
This is a great name. One of my coworkers has a 10 year old son named George that he brings to "bring your child to work day" and it fits him very well.
A bit too old fashioned for me, and a little bit short, but I think it's better than some of the weird boy names nowadays.
Strong name that has increased in popularity. I would pair it with any surname of more than one syllable. Needs no nickname. For me, it's a family name -- my grandfather George would be 125 years old now.
I really like this name, it's classic and sweet, and it has the connection to the very talented Beatles singer and the great president.
Not too fond of this name, it seems to have too much clashing with the g.
I am an obsessive George Harrison fan- he was such an amazing human being. Because of that, I adore this name, and vow to name my first son George. It is honest, solid and traditional :) I love it.This name is actually currently very popular in the UK; there tends to be a few Georges in each year group. I think it is a name which suits a baby, a little boy, a teenager, a young man and an old man- timeless.
I like the name, and people should certainly not hate people that are called that name because it reminds them of our former president. And I disagree with the people that say it does not suit children, Becuase that does not matter because children grow up, so don't just think of how the name suits a little kid because that kid will grow up at some point. George is awesome as a name for all ages... enough said.
I guarantee there will be a big jump in popularity for George when this year's top 1000 comes out. The name certainly needed a boost, as its now becoming very underused despite its historic popularity. The name is already very popular in England, but I have a feeling it will be back in the top 10 after a year of absence.
I think George is a great name. It was my grandfather's name and what we called our pet rooster when I was a kid (after my grandfather). Now the new prince is a George, I bet my grandfather would have been stoked if he was still alive.
Personally, I think this name is adorable. It would be very refreshing to hear on a little boy amongst all these horrible modern names people are coming up with. George might sound a little "old man"-ish, but not in a dated way like Melvin or Delbert. I'm happy to see how popular this name is in the UK, seems like their top 10 is a lot better than ours!
It would be so cute to meet a baby named George!
My father's given name was very, VERY off the wall. I won't mention it here because he dislikes it so. Anyway, he changed it to George. (It seems like every man who dislikes his name changes it to 'George.') It's a classic standby that's stood the test of time. I like it a lot.
My father's name is George. It suits him pretty well, I suppose. I like this name very much, despite people's demonization of the name due to George W. Bush (as if he's the only person with the name). What's ironic is that George is actually more popular in the UK than in the US. Wonder why?
Strong, classic boys name.
"George" is a very classic yet incredibly contemporary name. It loses none of its charm as it ages, and is highly suitable for young boys of upcoming generations. I find it to be a name that is timeless, oh so fantastically timeless. "George" holds character, it holds maturity, adventure, feistiness, respect... it is a one-of-a-kind gem. There is also not a stereotype that silently suggests it be better suited to one person than another.
I certainly would never rule-out the usage (be it for dubbing a human child or an animal).
George Herbert Walker Bush and George Walker Bush... oh why did you leave us with Obama? Strong, respectable name (unlike "Barrack Hussein" or whatever).
I don't see the positivity/beauty in calling one's child earth worker - how did this become a name I wonder. It is more fitting to be a surname.
I really like the name George even though it's very popular here in Britain.
It's a classic name that will never go out of fashion.
George is a wonderful name, but it sounds a little... I dunno, harsh on a young boy. Still great though.
Yes the name does mean Farmer, which I think is a very humble/hard job, and my Father just happens to have been one all his life! I intend on naming the child I'm pregnant with after him. He is a hard working, loving, patient, kind man and I can think of no one better to name my child after!
I wouldn't let myself like this name while Dubya was in office, but now that he's gone, it's growing on me. It's really a very classic, manly name. I think it sounds strong, but warm, and that a little Georgie or Geordie would be adorable.
George feels like a mature name, and yet it would perfectly suit a man or boy of any age.
I didn't use to like this name, but it's starting to grow on me now - maybe because George W. Bush has gone!
I'm also a George, to my dismay. It's a nice enough name in its own right, but most people I know agree that it doesn't fit me. "George" seems to be a very physical name, more like something an artist or laborer might have. Foreign variants like Jorge or Giorgio aren't like that as much, but simply "George" is a blunt, solid, heavy name, particularly with respect to rural areas. Definitely falling out of modern use, from what I can tell.
There's something beautifully classic about the name George. Without a doubt, it's one of my favourites. The pronunciation is lovely, and it looks great written down. And of course as some other people mention, George Harrison gives this name positive connotations. It doesn't immediately make me think of Bush.
I have a great friend name George. I call him Jorge (pronounced HOR-hay), George in Spanish because he is half Spanish. I totally agree with some comments above, I can only see this name on a funny guy.And chill out with the association to George W. Bush, he's not even President anymore. So you can all sit back and relax.
It's a shame that everybody seams to associate this name with George Bush these days. It always makes me think of George Harrison and his song 'Here comes the Sun' which always makes me smile. I would like to use the name George because I think it's a classic strong name but I'm Dutch and it sounds it little too English. And of course, people will immediately think I'm a Bush supporter.
To me this name sounds more comedic than serious (best on a funny guy, I mean). It reminds me of the abominable snowman in old bugs bunny cartoons, who would pick anyone up and squeeze them saying "I will call him George, and I will pet him and hold him and love him etc." Lol!
I think someone said it before, but I can imagine this name on a little boy, too. XD Only reason I ever disliked this name was of George Bush.
It's nice, but I always think of our evil president, soon to be ex-president.
I think that George is a nice, basic name. It's nothing particularly amazing or cool-sounding, but it's a name that one could easily go through life with.
I have never liked the sound of this name with the two ''jee'' sounds, or however it's supposed to be spelled. Besides, I've grown to associate this name with rather unlikeable people.
This name is okay. It has a nice sound but I like the female version Georgia better. I also don't like any of the nicknames. My friend told me I look like a George.
I like the sound of it as a girl's name.
I used to think this name was so plain and boring. But then I read George Orwell's "1984". My opinion of name changed literally overnight. I LOVE IT! Also Harrison being my favorite Beatle, I certainly have good associations with the name!
George Harrison and George Weasley: two awesome people (one fictional, obviously) with this name. Cancels out the negativity of the current president in my opinion. Also the name of several brilliant writers. A good name.
I love the name! I could imagine a little boy named George just fine. Yes, some people are turned off to this name because of George Bush, however; once he is out of office the hatred levels will calm down and in ten or so years people will not think about him so much. So I say go ahead and use it. George is very strong and traditional but at the same time off beat, unexpected, and way underused on young children.
I like this name, it's a classic. The only issue I have with it is I really couldn't see it on a little kid. I would definitely use it as a middle name though.
Personally, I don't like it. But it's not that bad. It has a really cool definition! Plus, there is always the comedian George Lopez!
I adore the name George. I should - I named my son George. Baby George (as we call him) is gorgeous with red hair, peachy skin and blue eyes and he is the light of my life. George Harrison was a hunk too.
It's ridiculous to cut a name entirely based on your opinion of one person who bears it. And whoever above said this is not the place to dicuss your politics is absotlutely right! I don't come hear to read how much anyone loves or hates our current President. Take it somewhere else, please. That said, I also agree with the person who can't picture a little boy named George. It's a good, strong, traditional name. But I can't see calling a baby George. Still it would make a lovely middle name.
While everyone thinks of ol' Bushy, I think of the great George Washington.
It's no good to me since it reminds me of the American President Bush, the biggest bully on earth.
Guys, this name means farmer, if you want your kid to go far in life, name him after a name that has a good meaning like a King or something, not a farmer, it's so odd.
Is there anything wrong with being a farmer? It's one of the world's oldest and most important occupations! What do kings do except sit on their bums!? I'm a worker (not farmer, though) child and proud of that! It would be worse to name your child something that meant "headman". I don't like this name because of Mr. Bush, not because it means "farmer".
So you don't think farmers are important, is that it? Farmers amount to nothing is what you're saying? But beyond that, I hate this name - even though I prefer George Weasley to Fred. It's just too boring for me.
No matter how many good Georges are out there, I'll think of Shrub and go really violent.
I really do not think this is the place to express your view on politics. The name itself is brilliant and this IS a name site.
Hah, I can't really say much about this name. Just makes me think of George W., which gets me really, really annoyed.
I have a soft spot for this name, even though it sounds like it would belong to a wrinkly old man, I just like it. It is the name of my sister's cat too and it really suits him.
This name sounds much prettier and just rolls off the tongue in French.
I see this as an old fashioned name that isn't used much these days. In high school there was only one guy in a school of 1300 who had this name. At work now there is one guy my age named George and it just doesn't fit him. This is a name for someone of older generations.
I have never really liked the name George but I do like Georgia for girl.
Way too old fashioned for me. I just don't see the beauty in it.
George makes me think of an old grandad. It's hard to imagine a little boy having this name, but you're not born as an adult.
I personally think that it is a beautiful name and it reminds me of the Beatle George Harrison who was wonderfully talented.
George is a short version of Georgeta. Georgeta to me is a name of beauty and should be pronounced geor-jet-a.
"George" now carries ugliness for me with George W. Bush as the president. I'll never think of the name "George" again without contempt.
