Sohrab is the son of Hassan (the main character's Hazara friend) in Khaled Hosseini's "The Kite Runner". He was named after the mythological hero.

There are plentiful sources that state that Sohrab (also Suhrab, Sukhrab) literally means "red water" and connotes blood. [noted -ed]

The name Sohrab is derived from the shorter version of the same name "SRB or Sorb". Many scholars like the Austrian Walter writes write that "Serb" syarb, sirb, Sohrab or Serb according to Wus would mean strong, heroic. Untamed fights for freedom. Never gives in. Again according to other scientists this name would stand to mean family or family member.

Could be a reference to the Red Sea.
