Stanley Yelnats is the hero of the movie 'Holes'. He is something like Stanley Yelnats the second or Stanley Yelnats the third. (The neat thing is that Yelnats is Stanley spelled backwards.)

Stanley is an attractive name.

Funny because I personally find it quite unattractive. It makes me think of a puny nerd.

My impression of this name is negative, as it always makes me think of unpleasant guys, be they frat boys or sexist middle-aged jerks who have really let themselves go, yet are die-hard believers in the bizarre idea that women lose all their sex appeal at 35. I'm not sure where this idea comes from. It IS a name of a character in that cappy, overrated piece of garbage program South Park, but he's just a kid, so the idea must come from somewhere else. Well, SP is just another reason not to like the name for me. And hey, it's not like it sounds nice.

Stan Laurel is a famous bearer, although his real name was Arthur Stanley Jefferson.

When I hear the name Stanley, I picture a high school athlete, maybe a bit of a mama's boy. I don't know why. It's a good name.

I don't like this name. The one I knew was a complete jerk, and the Stanley Kowalski association is quite terrible.
-- bananarama  11/4/2009
Personally, I really like the name Stanley, although I prefer it as a last name. Never cared for the nickname 'Stan'.

I believe this name was often adopted by immigrants as an English "translation" of the Slavic name Stanis³aw / Stanislas / Stanislaos / Stanislav.

Stanley Martin Lieber (b. 1922), known as "Stan Lee". Legendary American comic book writer, editor, actor, producer, publisher, television personality, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics. He was inducted into the comic book industry's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995.

I can really see this name taking off with nerds as a result of Stan Lee being such a cult hero.

Stanley is the capital of the Falkland islands.

I find this name really funny, for reasons I'll never know. If I ever hear a mom calling out "Stanley, let's go!" I would burst into giggles. I don't know, it just sounds like a comedian name to me.

That being said, it's a cool name. It ages well, and it could fit different types of guys. I wouldn't use it though; I don't want to spend all of my child's life chuckling at the sound of his name.

Stanley Tucci (born November 11, 1960) is a very talented American actor, writer, film producer and film director. He has starred in such movies as The Devil Wears Prada, Julie & Julia, The Lovely Bones, and The Terminal, among many other memorable works.
-- Francesca  11/4/2011
Okay, this seems like a name only immature nerds (although I'd rarely use those two words in the same sentence) would name their child. You could name him in honor of Jack Stanley Hodgins from Bones, or Stan Lee. No thank you!
-- Meapergirl  12/19/2011
One of my best friends is named Stanley, and goes by "Stan". It isn't really a name I'd like on its own, but I associate it with my friend so it's grown on me. He is neither a "puny nerd" nor a "complete jerk", etc., the other comments listed above. He is a gentleman!

I think Stanley deserves a comeback. It's a handsome, sophisticated name without being too stuffy. It makes me think of the Stanley Cup, Stanley Yelnats, the main character in the book Holes, and Stan Marsh from South Park. An association for everyone's taste, I guess.
