Tom is also a common name in modern Hebrew (mainly for boys, but also for girls). It has no record in the Old-Testament, so it was probably taken from Latin Thomas/Tom. However, it wasn't taken for no reason: the word "Tom" in Hebrew means "Purity" (of the heart), or "Naivety" which makes it perfect for a child. But, It also means "End" or "Edge" which gives it a rather disturbing meaning...
Famous bearer is Tom Hanks, an Academy Award-winning American actor.

There is a poem/nursery rhyme that reads: Tom, Tom the piper's son/Stole a pig and away he run./The pig was eat, and Tom was beat,/And Tom went running down the street.

You can't forget Tom Collins from the movie/musical "Rent"!
Tom Felton plays Malfoy in Harry Potter. He also plays the little kid in the King and I.

I don't like this name much because of what it reminds me of either Death Eaters (Tom Felton plays Malfoy and Tom Riddle is Voldemort) or Tom Cruise. Neither do much to make the name Tom appeal to me.
Tom Cruise puts me off this name, but Tom Hanks makes it alright again. A Tom that doesn't jump on couches, isn't whiny, egotistical or a cult follower is a good Tom.

Two words: TOM WELLING. Star of the hit show Smallville. An incredible hottie, he plays young Clark Kent (pre Superman!)
This name is also commonly used in the Netherlands and the Dutch pronunciation is TAWM, it's pronounced very short, a lot shorter than the English TAHM pronunciation. [noted -ed]
Tom Morello! Tom Morello as in Rage Against the Machine! As in Audioslave! As in The Nightwatchman! As in innovative guitar solos, usually heavily distorted with pedals and toggle switches and God knows what else!
In John Steinbeck's novel, The Grapes of Wrath, the main character is named Tom Joad. His father has the same name. Wow, I can't believe no one's mentioned this before, that book is amazing.
This is the name, or nickname, of so many dislikeable people. Tom Cruise, Tom Tancredo, Tom DeLay, the annoying Tom Green, and blah blah blah. This seems to coincide with unpleasant personalities.
A famous bearer of this name is Tom Kaulitz, guitarist of the German rock/pop band Tokio Hotel. Cool fact: 'Tom' is a nickname for 'Thomas' which means 'twin' and Tom Kaulitz has a twin brother, Bill (singer of band). :)
Unfortunately, this name makes me think of Tom Cruise. I can't stand him or the ridiculous things that he does. Tom's also kind of boring, and is better off as a nickname.
Far, far, FAR too common for my liking. Thomas is a fine name, but this diminutive of it I can't stand.

I think it's a very good name for a boy. Every time I hear this name I imagine damn hot & sexy Tom Felton! But also I call "Tom" my best friend Tamara.
This name is only good as a nickname. Do not give him this as his full name! It is not strong enough therefore it will make it more difficult for him to be taken seriously throughout life as 'Tom' sounds funny.. therefore is good only as a nickname.

I wonder why France seems to love this name so much. It's been it their top 10 before, which is quite strange to me. Tom should only be left as a nickname, its just a little too plain as a full name.
