Meaning & History

From Latin Samuelis, which is the genitive of the third declension of SAMUEL, the biblical Latin form of the Hebrew name SHEMU'EL.

In the Netherlands, this has been used as a Latin form of SAMUEL (thus basically making it a latinization of a latinization) since at least late medieval times.

With that said, the name Samuelis is also in use in Lithuania, where it is simply the Lithuanian form of SAMUEL. As far as I know, the circumstances of the name are different in Lithuania than in the Netherlands, meaning that it does not derive from the Latin genitive like it does in the Netherlands.
