John Edward makes me think of the politician John Edwards. I don't know whether that bothers you or not. It's still pretty good. But yes I think Edward is a bit too formal for a kid and Ed and Eddy are a bit too dated for my taste, but if they don't bother you then go ahead. James is a good name, but I dislike the nns Jim and Jimmy personally. These are just things that you yourself should consider. I can't tell you which is the best choice for you. I think boys names are tricky.
