I know it used to be terribly common but I really like the sound of Ashley. What do you think? Pretty or dated?
Like Rachel and Rebecca I think it will be ready to use again soon as it is losing much of its popularity.
Still I worry because I think it has just been too common for too long, way more so than Rachel, for example.
What do you think? The downside would be that she would always be guessed much older than she actually was because she'd have the name of a previous generation. The upside...her name would be pretty much uncommon for her generation and it does sound pretty.

Ashley is pretty enough. I suppose it's not as popular now as it once was, but even so, the problem is, a name that is not popular with babies being born now, but is very popular amongst twenty-somethings, just seems passe. For instance, our erstwhile neighbors had a now four-year-old named Heather. I don't like Heather, but even if I did, I wouldn't think, "Heather! Cool! There aren't many four-year-olds named Heather!" I've known so many older Heathers that all I thought was, "Heather! How passe! Don't they know how tired Heather is?" Because I've known so many of them. I've known quite a few Ashleys also.
Names need a longer rest than Ashley has had. It's not fresh enough to be charming in an old-fashioned way.

For a boy, it's not bad. I can't stand it for a girl.
In the US, I certainly think it's dated. It's not common for girls in the UK, for boys it's slightly dated.

I dislike it on a girl since it's alittle dated, way to common and for some reason I just dislike the sound of it for a girl.

I think it's still too popular. It has dropped in popularity by a bit, but it's still up there (#20 for girls in the U.S.), which I find surprising because I thought it would have been less popular by now. I was surprised that it was still in the top 10 in 2005. It's going to be a while before it's time for revival.
It's been popular so long that it would be difficult to guess her age. People might have a general idea in mind, but like Jennifer, which has just barely left the top 100, it's difficult to pinpoint.

Ashley is so handsome and unexpected on a boy!
On girls, because it's one of those names that was only used in a specific period of time in a specific place, it's extremely dated. I can only picture it in an American girl under 20 - unlike Rachel and Rebecca which are Biblical classics and have been around for centuries and will always be used.
Aisling [ashleen] is a much nicer, feminine alternative.
