I adore Eva, pronounced EH-va ("ev" like nEVer) & EY-va (like Ava). I don't like EE-va as much, but it is okay. All three are legitimate pronunciations, but I know that most people will call her EE-va.

I want to name my daughter Eva Sophia or Eva Natalia - either pronounced EH-va or EY-va. DH refuses to spell EY-va as Ava. And I'm not sure how to get EH-va conveyed so that people won't automatically read it as EE-va. Any advice, or am I just looking at a lifetime of correcting people (which isn't the worst thing in the world, I guess.)?

Also, which do you think is the prettiest pronunciation?

I like the pronunciation EE-va the best. I think it is the prettiest.

If you want it pronounced AY-va though, I think spelling it Ava makes the most sense. I don't really know how else to avoid the pronunciation issue...

My first thought is if you want to pronounce it EY-va then spell it Éva. Whenever I see Eva I automatically say EE-va. I prefer the sound EY-va (AY-va) but I'd only say it like that if it was spelt Éva, Ava or Éabha.

I like EE-va.

Eva- EE-va to me.
Ava- EY-va

Although alot of people say Eva like EY-va, too. I hate that. EH-va sounds like something you'd say like being a drama queen:

"OMG, girl, lemme teeeeeell YOU what that girl right over they-ah is wearing TODAY! Did you see it? OMG giiiiirl. That was the ugliest outfit EH-va!"

See? I've been watching too many chick flicks.

But Eva and Ava are both gorgeous.

I like "ee-va"; it makes the most sense to me and sounds wide-awak. "eh-va" sounds like a rapper saying "ever" - not a fan.

I think if you want people to get it right without constant pronunciation lessons, you might have to spell it Evva or éva.

I automatically pronounced it EH-va (because that's how it is over here), and that's the pronunciation I prefer. Either combo is very pretty, it's a tough decision!

I guess you'll just have to correct people.

The one used here and the only one I like is EH-vah. I don't think there's a way to avoid confusion in English-speaking countries, you just have to correct people.
I love Eva Sophia, but think that with this pronunciation Eva Sofia might be more 'authentic'.

Why don't you use Éva? I reckon people'd pronounce it properly as AY-va.
