A few months after Klara's first birthday, Rosita found herself to be pregnant again. She had a feeling it would be another girl, but hoped she was wrong, as she knew Heinrich would be upset if he didn't get a son.

Unfortunately, her feeling was right on. Rosita gave birth to a second healthy girl. Hoping to cool her husband's anger somewhat, she named the newborn Emilie, after Heinrich. (The girl's middle name, Berta, was the name of Rosita's late mother.)

Disappointed and upset by his lack of sons, Heinrich spends little time at home anymore. Rosita has taken to working part-time at the bakery in order to supplement the very meager allowance Heinrich leaves her for food. A kind woman, the bakery owner allows Rosita to bring Klara and Emilie to work with her. Luckily, Emilie is a fairly quiet and content baby, and Klara the baker often has trinkets for Klara the toddler to keep her busy while Rosita works.

Another perk to working at the bakery is that Gregor, the baker's (young and single) son, is rather handsome and always has a smile for Rosita.

Amidst all of the turmoil and chaos of everyday life, Rosita hardly has time to worry about goings-on at the palace, though she does overhear snippets of gossip throughout the day.
