Babs is kind of cute, but I have to be honest and say that Babette sounds absolutely ridiculous to me. It sounds like something you'd name your kid when you didn't know what to name her. "She's a baby...let's call her babe...Babette!" I know it's pronounced BA-bet not BAY-bet, but that still doesn't help. I'd only accept the name if the person were French.
Maybe I'm in the minority because I've never actually met a Babs in real life, but it doesn't really sound dated to me. I wish I could think of something other than Barbara as a full name, but I can't.
