I found this Italian name under the name Gianna (also a form of Giovanna) in a name book, but since it's Italian I have no clue how to pronounce it. I think it's really pretty looking, but I want the correct pronounciation.

Thanks!! It's really pretty, so is it 4 syllables or 3?? Gee-ah-NEE-na or Jah-NEE-na?? I'm just asking because I say G-O-Vanna or G-ahna. Can you write the pronouncitation out with stuff it rhymes with?? Thanks!

Like Tieliebirds said, the jya rhymes with 'spa', and is one syllable. When looking at Italian gi- words it's easiest to forget the 'i' and pretend that the 'g' is a 'j'. For example, Giulia is pronounced exactly the same as Julia.

Gianna - JAN-ah - rhymes with Hannah
Giovanna - jo-VANNA - doesn't rhyme with anything!
Italian vowels are *very* specific - each vowel letter represents only one sound in most cases, unlike in English where vowels are all over the place. In this case, it's 'a' as in "cat", 'i' as in the 'ee' in "free" and 'o' as in "joke".

Hi there! Gianina is three syllables: jyah-NEE-nah, not jee-ah-NEE-nah. You kind of say the "jyah" part fast, so it is just one syllable... Kind of like the word "spa" has three sounds in it like "jyah", but it's still just one syllable. Does that make sense? Okay, I know what: say the word "job" with a Y sound after the J and you have the sound! Also, Giovanna and Gianna are pronounced jyoh-VAH-nah and JYAH-nah.
