Jane or Joan
Which do you prefer, Jane or Joan? And (I always feel like I have to specify this :-D), if you dislike both, which do you dislike less?I prefer Jane to Joan, I guess I just like the long A sound more than the long O.

Jane x 1000!I think Jane is incredibly pretty and underused these days. It makes me think of Jane Eyre.

Jane definitely. I absolutely love this name, so classic & timeless.:)

JaneIt's my favorite girls' name at the moment. I don't particularly like Joan.

I don't love Jane but I like it much better than Joan. Like you, I just prefer the long 'a' sound. And I suppose I prefer the Jane spelling. It looks so neat, doesn't it? Finally, Janie is darling while Joanie doesn't do much for me (too many "Happy Days" reruns?).

I prefer Jane, but it may vary depending on what it's matched with.

Jane...For the same reason you gave, long A beats long O.

Joan! :-)Jane is pretty too, but I love my name more. I like that I'm the only Joan I've ever met (except for my Granny and Godchild). Plus, Joanie makes an awesome nickname. I wish more people used Joan though, then maybe people would pronounce it correctly.

How is it possible to mispronounce Joan? Or do people get it mixed up with Jane / Jean?

A lot of people pronounce it like Joann / Joanne. I've also been called John and Jane. Jane doesn't bother me too much, but John really ticked me off.

Jane!!!I love Jane. I think it's adorable, lovely, and classic.I don't care for Joan, as it's quite dated, and just don't have the full pretty sound of Jane. They are similar in spelling, and somewhat similar in sound, but they are SO different to me.

I like Jane better. I like the sound of it.
The sound feels more classy and feminine to me than Joan.

Difficult...Joan, I guess. I always thought it was kind of cute. Jane is kind of...plain. I mean so is Joan but Joan has something very sweet about it.

I find both names boring and dowdy honestly. Jane is marginally better, it sounds better than Jane.

JoanMy favorite aunt, Joan, passed away last year. So I'm biased. But I love the strength of the name Joan. The contrarian in me knows that Jane will be the more popular and so Joan needs all the support she can get. Joan makes me think of medieval England for some reason. Plus, I'm hoping the rising popularity of Jonah / Jonas might raise Joan's prospects as well.In general, I'm more drawn to the long "a" sound than the lond "o" sound too. But I've got other, competing interests in my head when it comes to the name Joan.

I like both very much, with Jane being eternally classic and Joan being a throwback to 1930s glamour. Today, I prefer Joan; I absolutely love it.
