Zemfira
What are your thoughts on the name Zemfira? It's a Russian/Persian/Bashkir name that means "sapphire." I'm thinking of it as a middle name. Opinions, comments?

Zemfira is very pretty in my opinion. I've never heard the name Zemfira before. I love it. It would make a great mn. I also like it as a first name.

Wow. Zemfira is a stunner, especially as a mn where she can't cause too many traffic accidents. She's definitely a head-turner. Gorgeous. There's something rather mysterious about it, in a "Brothers Karamazov" kind of way. It's reminding me of the monk Zosima, I think. What would you use as the fn? It's always a difficult balance, finding something that won't clash style-wise, yet isn't too "out there." I'd love to hear if you've got anything already in mind. :-)

I like it, but i wouldn't use it if i didn't have an ethnic connection with one of the source languages, or some other personal connection to one of those cultures.

I really love Zemfira and I think it would make a lovely middle name. I might have some hesitations about it as a first name, but as a middle name I think it'd be gorgeous.

Iffy, but it could work. It's an interesting name, I'll give you that, and it does have a nice sound to it, but it's kind of odd.I know quite a few interestingly odd names that could work just as well as Zemfira, if you're interested:Alysel (Ah-liss-ell)
Majora (Mah-jor(Like Major)-ah)
Liset (Lih-set)(Like sunset and the name Lee, just with a soft "i" sound.)
Melissa (Meh-liss-ah)
Chopin (Sho-pahn)(Please note that Chopin is the last name of a famous polish pianist.)

I have to say that I think it's odd that you consider Melissa to be an interesting odd name. Melissa was a very common name in my age group. It was in the top 50 in the US from the years 1965 - 1997. It was a top 10 name for girls from 1967 - 1984. It was the number 2 girls name from 1977 - 1979.I was born in 1987 and it was number 13. I grew up knowing, meeting and going to school with so many Melissa's. My name is Marisa and when I introduce myself people often think that I say that my name is Melissa. Sometimes I've had to repeat myself like 6 times because they keep thinking that I say Melissa. Some people have never met a Marisa / Marissa but most people have met a Melissa. Since Melissa is a common name and Marissa isn't as common, and the only name they are familiar with that is similar is Melissa they assume that's what I'm saying.Maybe it's because you're young so there aren't as many Melissa's in your age group or maybe you don't live in the US or maybe Melissa isn't a common name in your area, but most people in the US consider Melissa to be a fairly common familiar name. Also I looked around and there is no information that I can find about the name Alysel. It seems like it is made up or possibly a changed spelling of a different name. If you know anything about it I'm curious. I've heard of all the other names you mentioned. I like Liset as a nn for Elizabeth. I'm uncertain how I feel about Liset on it's own.

First connection - the musician, of course. When I was first learning Russian, one of my teachers was obsessed with Zemfira and would try and teach us stuff from her songs. We all had to sit there chanting Zemfira lyrics whilst she played the guitar badly. She was so lovely and I guess it's such a weird way of teaching that it stuck, but it was utterly ridiculous and 90% of the class, myself, can't sing for anything, so my memories of Russian classes back then are mainly blurry recollections of terrible singing. So yeah... that's what Zemfira makes me think of, haha.I like it. It's very pretty... but something about it just doesn't sit right with me. I guess I find it a tiny bit airy and unsubstantial, but I don't know why.
