Re: An interesting ancestor set

Deliverance? I see the attraction of Puritan names in general. But Deliverance has taken on a completely different meaning recently. Have you ever seen the infamous, 1972 movie "Deliverance?" To this day, it's a euphemism for backwoods ignorance / cruelty. (I'm not saying people in the country are anything like this movie. It's just the popular go-to term for a certain stereo-type.) So Deliverance is out for me.
Temperance reminds me of Carrie A. Nation and her "successful" temperance movement that brought about Prohibition in the U.S in the 1920s. Crime and bootleggers. No thanks.
But the rest are pretty neat. I especially love Mercy, Prudence and Patience. Constance is an overlooked gem that could easily make a comeback. Normally I would be all over Sophia as a name for a kid in real life. But here I kind of wish Sophia had been Wisdom instead. :-/

When was the Deliverance in the book supposed to have lived? Deliverance didn't have the connotation it does now before the novel "Deliverance" was published. I wouldn't think anything of reading an historical novel with a character named Deliverance, for that reason.
Funny. I think that the temperance movement was incredibly stupid, that Prohibition must have really sucked, I'm really glad that it didn't last, and I really like a drink or two. But I still love Temperance and the nickname Tempe. I guess that I'm successful in giving a broader meaning to the word "temperance". But now that I think of it, given that I feel the way that I do, Temperance is a name that I should probably never consider really using. Like Faith.
I really like Mercy (even though my daughter knew a bitchy Mercy) and Patience, also, but hate Prudence.

Wot? A bitchy Mercy? How is that possible? Didn't she see her name and know how to act accordingly? :-P
I actually kind of feel like with any virtue name, the bearer is going to turn out to be the exact opposite. For example, Patience will be the most impatient person on the planet. Temperance is going to be quite immoderate. Verity will love to "weave stories." Chastity... well, too many raunchy jokes already exist, and I don't want to reprint them. And Mercy will be a little terror.
I saw Deliverance and totally heard that dueling banjo theme.;)
