Spelling and nn's for Hazel
Which are your favorite spellings for Hazel? The ones that come to mind for me are Hazel, Hazell, Hazelle, and Hazele. I'm certain there are other alternative spellings. The only two I would personally use are Hazel or Hazell but Hazelle is not so bad. I'm curious which your favorite spellings are but also whether you prefer Hazel or Hazell and I'm curious if you feel that Hazell is useable?
What nn's can you think of for Hazel and which do you like? I thought of Haze, Hazey, Zell, Zellie, Elle, and Ellie. Are there any others you can think of? I'm personally liking Zel / Zell, Elle, and Ellie. Do you feel that any of these are too much of a stretch, which are useable in your opinion?
Thank you so much for all of your opinions.

Update and another question...
Today since I had a few hours alone working outside at the horse farm I decided to say some names and nn's out loud in my normal talking voice, names always sound so different when spoken rather than whispered.
After mulling over things awhile I decided that I actually prefer Zel / Zell / Zelle and Zely / Zelie / Zelly / Zellie / Zeli / Zelli to the other Hazel nn's. I also like Zella and will consider that nn more. I don't dislike Haze, Hazey, Elle, or Ellie but they aren't my preferred nn's. Truthfully though I'll probably give my children so many nn's that I'll use all of those and then some.
After reading everyones posts I decided that you guys are right about it being weird to use a different spelling for Hazel since it is a plant name. Of course some day I'll discuss this with my partner to see his opinion about this. I still don't mind the spelling Hazell.
Thanks everyone. I'm not pregnant but I just had my birthday last week. My birthday always causes me to start thinking about babies. It also doesn't help that I'm working around children and one of the people I'm volunteering with is pregnant. I've just really got children on the brain.
Also quick question which nn spellings do you prefer? Zel or Zell or Zelle? And Zely, Zelly, Zelie, Zellie, Zeli, or Zelli? Also Zela or Zella? Thanks everyone. :)

Zel, Zeli and Zella for me.
My favorite is definitely Hazel which I really like. Hazelle makes me want to say hah-ZEL so I'd definitely avoid it unless you want to correct people a lot. It also reminds me of The Hunger Games, I think a minor character was named Hazelle. I know someone with the surname Hazell so I guess it's legit, but it looks misspelled and makes me want say HAY-zell (with the E pronounced very prominently). I'd definitely go with Hazel. I guess they are all usable but with Hazell and Hazelle you'd have a lot of explaining and correcting to do.
I think Elle and Ellie seem kind of far fetched and I dislike Haze, Zell and Hazey. Zellie is cute. I'd go with Zellie, but I think it doesn't need a nickname. I can't think of any other appealing nicknames. There's Hay and H but those are pretty unattractive.

Since it's a noun I can't see any other spelling than Hazel. Zellie is an adorable nn for it. :-)
Just Hazel for me. Hazell just looks awkward because that's not how the word is spelled. Hazelle kind of looks like a typo for gazelle (especially since H and G are together on the keyboard...) Also, Hazell/Hazelle/Hazele would be haz-ELL, not HAY-zel.
Haze and Hazey are cute. So are Elle and Ellie, but more of a stretch. Zel, Hay? (Okay, Hay wouldn't work because she wouldn't know whether you were saying "hey" or her name...)
I think Haze and Hazey are the best nn options here.

Definitely Hazel. The others don't make sense to me, so many unnecessary letters and they're all basically misspellings of the word "hazel". Hazele is the only other spelling that wouldn't totally make me cringe but still...why the extra letter?
I don't like Hazel but yes it is usable...quite old-sounding though. I think anyone named Hazel would inevitably be called Haze by her friends, and I suppose it's a cute nickname. Elle and Ellie definitely sound like too much of a stretch to me. Completely different names imo.

Hazel is the best spelling, IMO. Hazell and Hazele just seem to have extraneous letters for no good reason, and Hazelle seems like it should be pronounced Hay-ZELLE. I almost thought Hazele should be Hay-za-LEE at first.
If you must use a nickname for Hazel (it's so short , I don't think it needs one), I feel that Elle and Ellie are probably the best options.

Absolutely Hazel. The rest are horrible. Why change the spelling at all? It is a word, after all.
I think those are all usable. I think a nn can be whatever your heart desires it to be. There's a girl named Elizabeth that I know and she goes by Zandi.
I like Haze, Zell, Zellie, Elle, and Ellie. None are too much of a stress.

Just Hazel, mostly because it's a word. But also because I have problems with the other spellings. Hazell reminds me of H...ell, and seems like both syllables would have equal stress like in Tyrell. Hazelle or Hazele looks like it should be rhymed with gazelle. But Hazell and Hazelle are usable, just very antique-looking. If Hazyl were a usual variant, I might guiltily like it. But since it's not ... nah. There's Hazle, which is awful.
I think Halie would work as a nn, or Hezzie. They would be less of a stretch than Ellie or Zel, IMO. But it does not need a nick. It's very tidy as it is and any nick except Haze seems a little try-hard.
