Iris or Kira?
I thought I'd be making a post like this about a year from now, but life has its surprises. I recently found out that I am due with my first child in early February. At first, I figured we would just use Kira for a girl, but now Iris, another name that I have liked for a long time, is on my mind as well. Which do you prefer?I've liked the middle name Winter for a while, and considering that this will be a winter baby, I have all the more reason to use it. I don't feel like I absolutely have to use it, though. I still need to ask my fiance if he likes it.WDYTO these Winter combos?:Kira Winter Ellia (Ellia is my grandmother's middle name)
Kira Marielle WinterIris Winter Ellia
Iris Winter Marielle
Iris Marielle Winter

I far prefer Iris. Kira could be KIEra, could be KEEra, could be KEEara ... too much like hard work. Iris is one of the very best flower names, and runs no risk of galloping popularity, unlike eg Lily and Rose.If it were me, I'd take Iris Winter Mariel (rather than Marielle), but Winter Ellia is also fine. Or, what about Iris Ellia Wynne?

I prefer Iris as a name, it's beautiful and feminine, and sweet. It's got an old fashioned charm about it but still feels fresh and on trend. However, I don't really like Iris with the middle name Winter because it sounds like a description of a plant. Iris Marielle Winter is very pretty, and I think it works best because it separates the two word names.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!I love Iris. It's beautiful, classy, underused, and suits all kinds of women and girls. Kira isn't awful or anything but it's a bit generic. It'll blend right in with all the super-trendy K names. I also don't think it ages as well as Iris.Iris Marielle Winter is lovely, though I'd prefer just Iris Marielle. Iris and Winter together is a bit too wordy. Ellia seems cutesy and made-up to me, and it's awfully vowelly with Iris. Iris Eleanor, Iris Eliana, or Iris Elena would be worlds nicer.

Firstly, congrats! How exciting! Secondly, I don't personally like the name Kira, so my vote would be for Iris. I find Iris lovely and far more substantial than Kira. I also think Iris will age much better, as Kira will sound very juvenile on an adult woman. Iris Marielle Winter is my fave combo. The flow is great and it has interest.

Many congratulations to you! I had an early February kiddo myself, and they are wonderful. Iris is in my own top 3, but I dislike it with Winter. Kira Marielle Winter gets my vote for best combo, with Kira Winter Ellia in second.

I'm sure everyone will say Iris, but I like Kira. It's sleek and pretty and not as clunky as Iris. I like Iris, but I just like Kira better.I like Kira Marielle Winter. Congrats on your pregnancy. :)

Hmmm, I like both Kira and Iris.
I think Kira is an oddly powerful and heroic name ... at the same time it is breezy and graceful. On paper it seems like it gets lost in Kiaras and Keiras and Kieras, but IRL I think it stands out from them (I know a young Kira, and a Keira too - Kira has a much better name IMO). Iris - well, I think it's sort of a fashiony name and not as timeless as Kira. But who cares. It's cool and graceful too, and doesn't have that slightly trivial feel that Violet or Daisy does... it's more like Rose, kind of significant seeming.Just this morning my daughter (8) and her friend were playing a name game and rhymed Iris with virus. Not that I think that detracts from the name Iris. I am just mentioning it because I think it's funny.I think the combo Iris Winter isn't very good. It's not bad, but it's too word-y, and vaguely contradictory because irises are spring/summer flowers. Iris Marielle Winter is okay, though, since the words are separated.Kira Winter Ellia is the best combo, I think. IMW is second.
KMW is very good too.ETA because of comments others have made about Kira: Kira comes of age, and ages, just fine. You might not know that if you have only heard of it as a "baby girl name" but I know a Kira my own age. It's a strong name in real life. Keira, not so much. Kira is Cyra, like Cyrus; Keira is some faux Irish fad thing. Iris is relatively wan, and tends to be nerdy. Not that I don't like it, but it's different from Kira. I think it's less eagle-ish and confident, more reserved and softspoken and shrewd.

Congratulations!Iris Winter Ellia and Iris Marielle Winter are so beautiful. I far prefer Iris to Kira. Kira is nice, but rather shrill and perpetually immature sounding to my ear.
