Thoughts on Hildegard?
Replies
I don't think I would use it, but there's nothing wrong with it. It's quite pretty, really, and it'd be refreshing to meet a baby bearing the name. My favorite nickname for it is Hildy (although I find Hattie adorable as well. I never considered it as a nickname for Hildegard before. Very clever!). If I were to use Hildegard, I might just have to make her middle name Helen so I could call her Hildy Helen (saw that in a book and I thought it was so sweet). It's a nice name. I give it a thumbs-up, definitely.
it's ugly
Uglier than homemade sin, the kind of ugly that transcends ordinary ugliness and ends up cartoon ugly, the name a cartoonist would pick for a mean, ugly witchy character because nobody would believe an ordinary person would be named such an ugly name. Like Brunhilda.

Agree
I agree with your description of it being cartoon ugly. It's not just conventional ugly, or sort of unpretty; it veers totally into being a caricature.
I'm even okay with some ugly! But not joke ugly.

Smoldering
I love it because it's unabashedly earthen and staunch. My favorite nickname is definitely Hildy, which simply makes me swoon.

Matronly, but it could be young and badass on the right person.
It reminds me of Bosom Buddies. I don't remember if Tom Hanks or Peter Scolari played Hildegard- the other was Buffy. Well, just when they were in drag so they could live in an all woman's apartment building that was the only place they could afford when they were forced out of their old place.
I like Hilda or Hildy for a nn. It's a name that few people could handle.

I like it in theory, not so much in practise, and I think it'd take a particular kind of young woman to pull it off.
It's ballsy and grand. I like it.
Sorry, but I think it's awful. Sounds like an old, mean and ugly lady with warts on her nose.
I like it, but as a character name. I would never seriously name my kid this.
