Recently I posted about Melissa and Clarissa, two names that have the same ending, both of which I dislike. Now I'm posting about two names both of which I like, which, like Melissa and Clarissa, have the same ending. So of these two, which do you prefer?
Amanda or Miranda
Me: I do like Amanda, but I like Miranda more. I love Miranda. The reason I prefer it to Amanda: One, it's been less popular so it isn't dated. And two: I like the first syllable of Miranda more than I like the first syllable of Amanda. I can't think of any other way to put it than that.
However, my sisters always made fun of me for liking Miranda, citing Carmen Miranda.

I used to like Amanda a lot until I'd heard it so much. The final nail in the coffin for me was during my first pregnancy when dh and I were discussing different names. Amanda became "a man, duh" and it sort of ruined the name for me. Also, while growing up, my eldest dd had a friend with a sister named Amanda. Her family nn? Duh!
Miranda is less common and more exotic and I'd use it quite happily if dh cared for it (he thinks Miranda Rights).

There was a "Simpsons" episode in which Bart called the bar and asked the bartender if Amanda Hugenkiss was there. So the bartender started yelling, "Where's Amanda Hugenkiss? I need Amanda Hugenkiss! Why can't I find Amanda Hugenkiss?" The joke being, it sounds like "A man to hug and kiss." We used to once in a while call our friend Amanda Amanda Hugenkiss.

I think I went to school with 6 different Amandas. It's so so so boring for me. Amanda, Jennifer, Sarah, and Stephanie. Ugh. Also, Mandy sounds so ditzy. Shudder. Anyway, obviously, I'm not a big fan.
Miranda is okay. I don't love it, but I would certainly choose it over Amanda. Randy is better than Mandy, I think. Although I would totally choose Andy as a nickname if I was an Amanda or Miranda. Or maybe Mira or Miri for Miranda. Or Mindi.

I love Miranda. It's silvery beautiful. I enjoy Amanda's approachable, bubbly warmth too, but there's something rare and fine about Miranda. I'd call a Miranda "Miran" or "Randa" for short probably. Much nicer than Randi :) Though, I know a Miranda and nobody, as far as I know, calls her anything but the full name.

Miranda has that lovely Shakespearean association, which trumps Old Fruity Hat; Amanda has gazillions of interchangeable Mandy people. Can't place the reference - some play or other, Noel Coward I think - but the sophisticated main character is Amanda. Someone young and ditzy turns up and gushes and says "I shall call you Mandy!", and gets the icy reply "Yes, I suppose you will".
There aren't many who'd risk naming an ordinary daughter Miranda in countries where randy = oversexed. You need to be super-wealthy but invisible to journalists. I'd only consider it as a mn.

I don't know Carmen Miranda.
However, I prefer Miranda too.
I love the nickname Mira or Miri, so any name that allows that usually gets my vote.
I prefer the letter M, and most of the names I truly love start with M.
Miranda is a little less popular in my personal experience and was not as superfluous in the 90s as Amanda was.
Both are lovely names as far as recognizability, easy of spelling and pronunciation, so my preferences are purely aesthetic.

That's hard. I like both, and they're pretty much equal in my eyes.
I guess I slightly prefer Amanda. The mere possibly of Randi/Randy would be enough to keep me from using Miranda.

You have a point. The possiblity of Randy as a nickname was the only obstacle to my using Miranda. Mandy is a far preferable nickname.

As I said in my original response I've known two Miranda in my life. One of them is called Mirre, and I can't remember calling the other one anything else than Miranda. If she has a nickname, it's Mirre as well.

The only Miranda I ever knew was called Mandy. Actually, she always gave her name as "Mandy Beth Moody Miranda." Her last name wasn't Moody but it rhymed with it.
I don't like Mandy at all, but have only known one or two Amandas who were called it, and that was when we were kids, they started insisting on Amanda once they got older.

I was friends with an Amanda who did that. We all knew her as Amanda and always called her that. Then when I went with her to visit her aunt, her aunt kept calling her Mandy, and that's when I realized that Mandy had been her nickname when she was younger. It was jarring because I just didn't think of her as "Mandy."
