Politics
in reply to a message by Bitey
I am pretty darn sure that it was not only chosen for religious and personal reasons (they like to travel?), but also to wave their political flag very very high. Derick was wearing an Tsahal Israeli Defence Forces shirt in one of the People pictures.

Yuck. As a strong defender of Palestinian rights and a supporter of a two-state solution, I think the name Israel is too political.
David, on the other hand, is a nice, classic and strong name.

I read somewhere that Israel is one of Jill's favorite places. In fact, I believe that's why Derick purchased her engagement ring there. That could be the reason for the name. Personally, I'm not wild about Israel David, but the name could have been much worse.

Ugh. I didn't know that. I was just thinking they went for a more uncommon biblical name. That changes everything...

Ironically, that's why I don't like the name. I don't like seeing names used for political reasons. And why would he be so big on the IDF? I thought the Duggars were the type of evangelicals who think that non-Christians go to hell. Christians are a minority in Israel, and most of the Christians living there are Arabs (and they're usually Orthodox to boot, which is very far from the Duggars' beliefs).

Or Catholics, a group some evangelical Christians see as heretics...

Christian Zionism is a big thing for American fundamentalists. I'll let you look it up for yourself because this is not really the place to discuss it, suffice to say that it's somewhat disconnected with much of the reality of the area.

I'll bet they're Zionists, so the Jews having a homeland in Israel is a-okay by them, as long as all those of Judeo-Christian beliefs have access to their places of worship. Not Muslims. But this is all speculation - I've never heard them state an opinion on the subject. I know, if he hadn't been wearing the t-shirt I would have thought, "how nice, they like travel, it must be a doubly meaningful choice." But seeing the Tsahal shirt I knew there must have been ulterior motives.

I think they are. At least, they "don't eat pork" (suuure) and some of the girls have been seeing wearing Star of David necklaces.

They've visited Israel several times and some of the girls have been seen wearing a Star of David necklace (isn't that kind of offensive to people who are actually Jewish?) so you're probably right on the money. edit: clarity
