I don't like Sam or Alex for either gender. Both are blah and not really exciting. They work for both, I'm just not crazy about them in general. Kai is trying too hard for either. Asa is okay. I don't have a specific gender in mind when I see it. Spencer used to be purely a boy name, and boring at that. But I actually do like it on a girl, especially dressed up with a more feminine middle name.
I like Spencer for a girl. Sam and Asa work too.
Kai is already a trendy boys name, so it sounds even worse on a girl. Alex is a common nickname for girls but it doesn't sound feminine too me.

I like Spencer a little. I'm not sure if it works. I don't even know a girl named Kai, but I know 6 boys with that name, so I'm not sure about Kai either. I thought it would be better for a girl than Charles or Peter or James. Although I do know a girl named Charlie.
I love Asa as a boys' name!
Very.
Great, now I want a little girl Gilgamesh. Thanks a lot. :P
Nn Gilly, perhaps?

I like it. It works on a baby and also a grown up. So versatile!
Spencer, Kai and Asa have too much historic usage on boys for me to ever like them on girls, and in any case, I find Spencer immensely unpleasant - it's a very hissing name. Sam I find dated, on either gender, but Alex I'm quite fond of in any instance, largely due to A Clockwork Orange, I think.
I like Alex too.
Sam and Alex work because they can be nns for Samantha and Alexandra respectively, I guess Asa and Kai are feminine enough, but Spencer feels masculine to me.
That is exactly what I thought. I'm taking back Spencer...
Spencer- Dislike on either gender. I know a horrible person named Spencer. And on a girl... it's just weird.
Kai- I agree that it has a certain feminine quality to it. But it's one of the only male names I like! Please don't steal it!
Asa- See Kai. I actually thought this was a girl's name when I first heard it. But now, I'm used to its masculinity.
Sam- Good for male or female, but only as a nickname. Samuel for a boy and Samara for a girl is my pick.
Alex- See Sam. I like it for Aleksander, or possibly Aleksei, on a boy. For a girl I like Alexia or Aleksa.

Everything true. Spencer doesn't really work on a girl, and Kai is not okay to steal from boys.
The only one I agree on is Sam, when used as a nickname for Samantha. All the other ones are male names only to me.
I have a friend named Sam who is a girl, so I agree with you.
I consider Alex and Sam nick names rather than full names. Whenever I have heard Alex and Sam used for girls, they have been short for Alexandra and Samantha respectively. Kai is unisex, but I prefer it on men. Kai has a knightly Arthurian quality that I like. Spencer is masculine, and on a girl it sounds as if the parents are trying too hard to make a statement with their daughter's name. On the previous post I mentioned that Asa is a boy name that could potentially work for a girl. Many traditionally male names have been taken over by girls, and it has really taken a toll on the number of names available for boys. I would let the boys keep a few names. There is no need to feminize them all.

That is very true. I just thought they would work. Not that I really like them...
Spencer - Makes me think of a privileged, somewhat sleazy teenage boy. I cringe when I see it on a girl. I really don't get the appeal for either gender, but girls especially.
Kai - Eh. Very boyish to me, because I've only ever heard it on boys. I much prefer Kaja or Kalani for a girl.
Asa - All boy, hands down. Right there with Micah and Ezra; I really don't get why people would try to turn these into girl names. It baffles me, honestly.
Sam - Not on its own, fine for a nickname for Samantha.
Alex - See: Sam. Just substitute Samantha for Alexandra/ Aleksandra.

Nope
And nope
(:Sam and Alex only minorly tolerable if as a nickname (Alexandra\Alexandria. Samantha\Samara\h and so forth)
I see nothing feminine or flattering for Spencer, Kai and Asa on a girl in the least primarily since unlike "Sam" and "Alex" they aren't a common nickname (the only time I prefer Alex and Sam on their own is on a boy)
I don't like masculine names on girls. It makes me think that the person prefering an obvious male name for a girl must be quite young or oblivious.
I would prefer for a girl to have an actual female name and for people to leave the boys names alone. (Again, Sam and Alex as nicknames)
No one would want all the boys names in the future to be stolen by girls.

Good point and thanks.
