Shelby
We have a new female twenty-something employee named Shelby. I see from its popularity statistics that it was quite a flash-in-the-pan. What do you think of Shelby for a girl? Do you like it better for a boy?

Well, from experience, I can tell you that I and every other Shelby I have ever known (which is many, it got somewhat popular around my area the year after I was born, go figure) has not been a camo-wearing hillbilly. I am twenty-something and most of the Shelby's I know are as well. I mean to summarize it the Shelby's I have known have been emo, band geeks, sporty, there is no particular set that the name regards. My mom liked the name for some time before I was born, it was not inspired by Steel Magnolias nor did my father like the cars, but trust me people ask. A lot of people tell me they really like my name.Personally, I don't dislike my name, I don't love it but I am Shelby. I actually have been writing and I think if I were ever going to try and publish anything I would use a different name for the simple fact that I think a name can "shout" amazing things and I don't like my surnames association with my father. My biggest issue with my name is there are very few that I have ever met that I haven't disliked as a person... that's my issue. I don't believe that I would be tempted at all to pass my name down. If I ever use an honoring name that I have, it would be my middle name Rebecca.

I love this name! Probably cuz it's the name of a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina, where I used to live. I also knew a girl in Charlotte NAMED Shelby, so yeah...lol I like it better for girls, but I guess I wouldn't mind seeing it on a guy.

I'm not sure why it gives me an impression of a spoiled brat. It seems cutesy, Danielle-Steel-character spunky.
Shelby, her sisters Sawyer and Piper, and brother Dashiell "Dash".
I've never met one. I guess it's okay in real life. There's no reason to think it's awful. It's about like Brittany.

I love Shelby for a girl. I always thought it sounded like the name of a smart girl for some reason.

It's ok, the first thing I think of upon hearing it is the car company, though.

I do know one young woman named Shelby.
I think that the name's popularity came from the movie"Steel Magnolias"; the daughter Shelby was played by Julia Roberts. I dislike the name, but if it must be used, then, for a boy.

I've only known two Shelbys. A girl I went to school with and a golden retriever. I like it better as a dog name.

This was one of the two names P and I had to immediately strike off our list when I was expecting Valerie. I love Maria, he despises it, and he liked Shelby and I couldn't stand it. I'm not sure why I don't like it, as I kind of like Shelley, and I like other similar names like Ashley and Courtney. It's not a terrible name by any means, but I just don't like it.
If I have to picture a Shelby, I picture some pudgy hillbilly girl with a pink camo backpack, cussing like a sailor and smacking her bubble gum and thinking she's all hard as nails. Strangely, I always had that image of Shelby, but then very recently I read a collection of short fiction called "Mississippi Noir" and in the very first story, there's a Shelby who is exactly like this, and also wears a t-shirt that says "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound." She also blows up her shack by fiddling with the gas lines underneath it to kill her stepfather when he lights up his first cigarette of the day.

Shelby is a name I'd categorize under "unfortunate".

I know three. Two are my age (late twenties to thirty) and one is 14. It's not really my style.
I think it's one of those "eh" names. Nothing overly frilly or overly solid, nothing flashy, but not crazily boring. I do like it better for girls, but only because I have never met a guy with the name. If I think about it long enough, I will probably change my mind. In every case that I heard this name though - I always thought that the person behind the name deserved something a bit nicer.
