Eva
Do you like Eva?How do you pronounce it in English?I used to always think it was okay and I was only aware of the English pronunciation EE-va.But a British friend of mine pronounces it EH-va (short EH as in Ever) in English and I quite like it. Now I am not sure if this is a common British pronunciation. How do you pronounce Eva in English where you're from? Did you ever hear it as EH-va in English?I am only asking about English pronunciations because I know Eva can be pronounced differently in other languages. In German it's EH-fa but the EH is long and outside of English speaking countries I've heard it as EH-va (long EH) a lot. But the British friend said EH-va (short EH), so like Ever but with an -a ending. She says Evelyn as EEV-linn and that seems to be the common British pronunciation. But I don't know how most people in Britain would say Eva, I always assumed EE-va.Please rate my list: https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/6232

I love the name Eva, have done for years. I also love Eve and go back and forth on which I prefer. I’m from Australia and pronounce Eva as EE-va and that’s the only way I’ve heard it pronounced here. I’ve heard it pronounced like your friend pronounces it, but only once. And that was an American not British person.

A relative, born in the UK before WWI, was named Eva and pronounced it EEva: she lived in former Southern Rhodesia until her death.Since it's a family name, I look on it with some favour, but I prefer Eve.

My go-to is EE-va. But I know people named Eva who pronounce their name the same as Ava. So I always follow their lead on that. I've never heard the EH-va pronunciation. I don't like it as well, but I see how some would get there. I have definitely heard the British pronunciation of Evelyn as EEV-lin, too, though.

I hear it 3 ways: eh- va, EE-va and occasionally Ay-va like Ava. I pronounced it as EE-va and prefer it that way. I'm a Midwestern American. Very cute name though it has Ava confusion potential I'll admit.
