Pandora and Persephone
What do you think of them? Do the mythological associations bother you, or do you like them? Middle name suggestions welcome but not necessary. Thank you! :)

Pandora is splendid, and I think she's a great namesake. Curiosity isn't a flaw. Pandora could be considered, spiritually, the Greek equivalent of Eve.
I love Persephone too. It's dramatic and flamboyant, and it could be a subtle way of hinting at the motherly devotion presented in the myth.My ultimate Pandora combo is Eve Pandora. But if I had to find a middle name... Is Pandora Jane too simple? Someone mentioned Persephone Sylvia recently, and I fell in love with it. If we're allowed two middle names, Persephone Sylvia Joan. And maybe Eve Pandora Jane? I usually avoid two one syllable names in a combo like the plague, but I think Pandora breaks the flow up nicely.

:) Two middle names are of course allowed! Persephone Sylvia Jone and Eve Pandora Jane are great!

Love both of them, of course Pandora moreso, being my favourite name. There's strength, fight, sass, and mischief all bundled into one. Persephone's is elegant, and beautiful, in a dark, floral way, so great imo. Neither connection bothers me. Greek mythology holds a lot of interest and joy for me, so the connection is positive, even if the myths themselves are not. If anything Pandora's commercial associations are more an issue (not a big one though). Middles for Pandora, I think short, fun, and feisty; Pandora Clio, Pandora Ezri, Pandora Kitty, Pandora Sylvie. For Persephone I'd go whimsical, maybe wordy; Persephone Alice, Persephone Winter, Persephone Iris, Persephone Amalia, Persephone Wren.

Persephone Wren! I really love that. Thanks!

I like Pandora more on both counts. Pandora's myth is about the conundrum of, like, knowledge? I also really like the sound and I think a lot of the nicknames are cute. It regularly makes it to the top of my list.Persephone is almost appealing to me - I like the sound less, I like Persi and Sephie less than Pan/Panda/Dora. And the mythological Persephone is too extravagantly gothic for me to want to pin her name on a child. As I keep saying on this board, she was the underworld goddess - she isn't the goddess of both worlds, when she's above ground her name is Kore. Persephone is a dark halloween queen.

Pan is so cute, but if I mentioned that to my partner (I feel so silly using the word partner) he would squish my hopes and dreams immediately. “What, like a frying pan?” He will probably veto Percy too but at least it’s not a cooking instrument, haha. Also, I love “dark halloween queen”. What a compliment!

My English lit TA named his daughter Persephone. I think they called her Sephie. Pandora carries a bit too much weight.

I like Pandora, but I don't like Persephone. Pandora sounds like a studious, bookish kind of girl who is a little quirky, but not in a smug or obnoxious way. Persephone is the spoiled daughter of doting parents who never learned boundaries and snatches toys out of the other kids' hands. Those are the images each name gives me.

I always like hearing about the images names give! I don’t get images from a lot of names. I like your description of Pandora :)

I love them both!

I like them both.I would prefer Persephone. I like how she created the seasons. Pandora's associations seem worse. Also, Pandora, the company, makes those terrible terrible charm bracelets (no offense to anyone who does like them).Persephone is fun to say.

Ooh... the company is a bad association with Pandora.Allowing myself to be pedantic, but Ceres/Demeter created the seasons. Persephone just inspired it. Persephone's role in mythology is not as a seasons-creator, but as ruler of the underworld with a feminine flair.

Yuck, good point about charm bracelets. Persephone is really fun to say!

Persephone will unfortunately be unfamiliar to most people, which could easily lead to her being nicknamed Percy. Worse things can happen, but having to deal with a lifetime of explanations plus being called Percy would put me right off the idea.Pandora is all Adrian Mole.

I know this was the exact opposite of your intention, but the potential for Percy as a nickname has absolutely sold me on Persephone. I love that. I think the Adrian Mole association is fun :)

I agree that Percy is pretty cute even though I said I don't like it as much as Pan

I've had the tv theme on my brain for hours ... I'm profoundly in love with Pandora, My poetry has existential themes ... etc! Moi, I'd rather use Adrian.

I forgot there was a show, it pre-dates me by some time. I liked the books a lot as a teen, though!

For the sound I prefer Persephone, but both of them have really negative meaning/association (Pandora was the first woman and brought all the bad things into the world, and seemed to have femme fatale connotation to me, also the website said Persephone's meaning is some "destroy" or "murder" things and she suffered a whole lot in the mythology) I personally dislike mythological names, but I don't even think most people would think these two names work because everything about them are so negative.
