I think the worst names in the world are the names given to girls in India (or other cultures where sons are much more valued than daughters) which literally mean "unwanted" or "send a son" in the native language. It is just horrible to actually do that to one's own child. This was formerly common in some parts of India, and there have been organized movements to change the names of girls who have been given these labels:https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2052606/From-undesirable-Goddess-Hundreds-Indian-girls-translates-Unwanted-chose-new-monikers-fresh-start.htmlThis is, by the way, very different from cultures that give what are called "derogatory protective" names. This occurs when people believe that infant deaths happen because the gods or spirits are taking the child to the spirit world for themselves. So parents who have had several infants die before will give the next baby a name which means "dirt", "feces", or something else very unattractive in their language, to try to fool the spirits into thinking the child is not worth taking. In this case, though the name may seem horrible to outsiders, it actually is a statement by the parents that they love the child very much and want to make sure it survives. So I don't consider them as bad as the names in India which deliberately tell a girl she is devalued because of her gender.

This.At first I wasn’t even going to answer this question because I thought it would just be hard for me to answer; But I don’t like names like Gwandoya - which literally means “met with misery” which in my opinion isn’t a very nice way to welcome your child to the world. Or in my culture names like Asefi, which kind of rub me the wrong the wrong way. Overall I’m just not of fan of names where the meanings are a little too personal in a bad way. Those are the worst and most awkward names to me. Some are good and some are bad. Either way it’s interesting.

Reminds me of something I learned when I was living in China, about how historically some girls received names meaning “brings little brother “ or sometimes apparently weren’t given a name at all (which wouldn’t make things impractical, no matter how much you dislike the child/don’t want her around?).

I'm just going to say this... ANY unattractive and unappealing spelling of any kind of name that parents keep inventing everyday just to be "Kre8tyve".Jaxxon and Jaxtyn for an example.

Any name that is racist, associated with an evil person, or derogatory toward the bearer. For instance, naming a child "Mistake" probably wouldn't be allowed, but some jerk out there has probably tried it. Supposedly a woman in Germany named her baby Jihad. Names like Adolf, Pol Pot, Mao Zedong and Idi Amin are associated with millions of deaths so, even though the names are not bad apart from their famous bearers, these names are among the worst.

Its me im just on my phone random person how is the name sihjad bad what does it mean?
vote up1
I think Jihad from Germany’s mother probably chose his name because of its meaning, ‘struggle’; he was 13lbs. Instagram illustrator yesimhotinthis is married to a man named Gehad, which is an alternate spelling. Calling extremists Jihadis is something of a misnomer. It’s a religious term that has been misappropriated.
vote up3
If the term Jihad is at all used to refer to jihadist terrorists in Germany, then I will stick with my statement that it is among the worst naming choices that I've heard. If you can assert that poor Katie is among the worst names, then I don't think it is a stretch for me to consider Jihad among the worst.

Okay…I just wanted to share some cultural context. Regarding Katie, I said there was no real answer to the question—because there isn’t, really—and added “here are a few names I don’t like, just because”.

Fragrance is probably one of the worst names I’ve ever come across
Probably, a lot of the “worst ones” would be names you only come across in buzzfeed articles about weird names. Like Abcde or Sex Fruit.
But here are some names that I strongly dislike that I’ve actually seen in the top 1000 (bear in mind most of these are in the 400s and 500s): Tatum on a girl (I think it’s cool on a boy though)
Carter on a girl
Logan on a girl
Sage on a boy
Kingsley
Huxley
Palmer
Seven
Royalty
Bentley
Atlas
Remington
Prince/Princess
Legacy
Reed
Porter
Tripp (wtf)
Major
Saint
Princeton
Wells
Any variation of Oakley
Cannon
Banks
Dior
Brixton
Capri
Henley
Boston
Axton
Holland
Creed
Tru
Loyal
Loyalty
Scout
Egypt
Shepard
Granger
BishopThey all sound like spoiled children or dogs. It sucks.

Fragrance is lol horrible.Tripp is short for triple, like John Edward III could go by Tripp or Trey. They shouldn’t actually be names, though, I agree.
vote up2
Trey is fine because it can be short for Treyvon or maybe even Trevor??? Tripp just reminds me of drugs
vote up1
Some of those names, I actually kind of like. Some I agree with you on, like Major and Dior. I really like virtue names though, like Legacy.
vote up1
Eh, maybe I could get used to names like Legacy if I heard them more often. But for now, they just sound like superheroes.
vote up1
I’m not a fan of misspelt names like Jaxcstyn, Emahleeigh etc
vote up2
There’s of course no objective answer to this, but here are a few names I don’t like, just because: Brogan
Kennedy
Sarah
Audrey
Brandon
Riley
Ethan
Evan
KatieETA: I don’t actually think these are the worst names in the world. I think it’s such a subjective matter that I just shared some that I really personally dislike instead. They’re not bad names.

Such is the nature of subjectivity :)

Names are subjective so there is no good or bad. I don’t think it’s possible to name the worst (or best) name in the world, so I shared some I personally don’t like.
