Do you associate these names with the Hunger Games?
Though the names are never used for characters in the books, I associate the names Ember, Willow, and Meadow with the Hunger Games, as they are things that are mentioned. I also associate Collins as that is the authors last name. Do you?

Replies

Nope! I think all of those are great choices. I know an Ember and a Willow.
Collins takes me a second to get, but I can see that.
No, I think they're pretty widely used. I only associate Katniss, Peeta…obvious Hunger Games names with it.
Not really, but then I’m a non American Xennial. I mostly associate Meadow with The Sopranos.
Collins is too common to be associated exclusively with the HG author.

Not at all. I'd be sooner to think of the City of Ember series, Willow Rosenberg, and Meadow Soprano.Granted I haven't engaged with Hunger Games content in a decade or more - that's a series that made a big splash ca. 2012 and is now has not faded, but definitely isn't nearly as big as it once was, so it's not something I'm going to think about unless I encounter, like, a Katniss or a Peeta, or maybe a Rue.
Have you not heard of the new book and movie their making? Everyone is talking about it.
Yes, I know they're doing something new, but regardless, it's only a fraction of the attention that it got a decade ago. In 2012, more than 37 million copies of the first three books were sold in the US alone. Nowadays it's still popular, but it's far more niche. Moreover, my point stands: I sincerely doubt most folks immediately assume Suzanne Collins when they hear a surname as common as Collins.
No, I have to try in order to remember those words being in the movie; they didn't stand out. I associate Willow with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Meadow was a celebrity baby name talked about here long ago (Meadow Rain Walker, she's in her 20s); I'd associate that with popularity. Ember mostly seems like updated Amber.I've never come across Collins as a first name and don't have any strong associations with it.

Not a bit. They would have read very nature/hippy to me 20 years ago, but in a way that's almost mainstream now.
I enjoyed The Hunger Games and want to read the new book that just came out but aside from some of the more unusual names, like Katniss and Peeta, etc I don't associate many names with the books. Ember - generically magical sounding, reminds me more of City of Ember or a romance novelWillow - definitely think of Buffy first and foremostMeadow - I think of hippies or trad wives (what opposites, right? yet they have similar naming styles imo lol)

It's cannon that the city of Ember takes place in the Hunger Games Universe, plus fire is a symbol in the Hunger Games. Meadow isn't hippy to me, more homeschool family vibes (I was homeschooled)
lol it is not cannon that City of Ember is part of the same universe - that's a completely different world and history, not to mention it's two different authors. Homeschool family vibes is basically trad wives vibes. They're almost the same thing and I bet that venn diagram is practically a single circle.
Thanks for you feedback. I do agree it is a homeschool feeling name, but we should not mock people for their career, political, and schooling choices.

I read Hunger Games last year and I do not remember Ember, Willow, Meadow. What I associate with: Ember - colour / rock amber. It is ok name.
Willow - I think that this is just me, but willow in my language is верба (verba), and that also rocket launcher.
Meadow - this is word, not name. It is not even good word name.
Collins - surname.
I've never read the books or watched the movie... movies? I just happen to know the main characters' names, and I can see where the association comes from. Those names fit the author's naming style. I do like those names on their own merit, within a cultural context, specifically American. I personally wouldn't use them.
I know less than nothing about The Hunger Games, so, no.
I don’t think of the Hunger Games, but I’ve also never read the books.
I've never watched or read it, and I haven't heard of any of those people that you named. So, I don't.
However, I've heard the names of some Harry Potter characters without ever watching or reading it. For that reason, I'm unlikely to use Hermione or Draco on my children.
I might still use Meadow or Willow because I love nature, and they make me thing of the beauty and tranquility that can come with them. But as a general rule, I want to avoid modern names. They are in danger of falling out of favor by the time that I have kids. I want to pick unique names, but not anything that will evoke strange responses.
I have a soft spot for Ember, but it does sound more like a fictitious name. Ember is a character from "Elementals", the Disney movie. Ember does sound elemental - like the name of a fairy, a mage, or someone with a fiery spirit. Ember carries weight.
Normally I enjoy surnames as first names, but I tend to not like ones that end in S. They sound plural. I like Collin over Collin, Bridger over bridges, and things of that nature.
Ember - I associate it with Charmander from Pokemon. It was one of his attacks.Willow - Buffy the Vampire Slayer.Meadow - I don't really have any associations, other than to someone's last name.Collins - It makes me think of Mr. Collins from Pride & Prejudice.
No, not really. I only associate the obvious ones - Peeta, Katniss, Gale (just with that spelling for guys), Primrose, Cato, Clove, Rue, and Finnick. That said, I’ve only read the original trilogy, so I might be missing something. However, Ember, Willow, and Meadow feel like pretty common nature words, and I don’t see a strong link between their rise in popularity and the books. As for Collins, I don’t instinctively think of Suzanne Collins when I hear it, but I can understand others making the association.
Nope! These are my associations:Ember - nothing. Generic romance novels maybe
Willow - Buffy the Vampire Slayer show
Meadow - The Sopranos
Collins - I think of Jackie Collins before Suzanne
I'm not sure how Collins became a female name. It seems more obvious it would become male. Meadow and Willow I associate with the song Katniss sang to Rue as she died. Ember I associate as Katniss is the girl on fire.
I'm not quite sure what inspired it either!
I hate Collins for a girl. Terrible.
