Cheyenne
What are your thoughts on Cheyenne for a girl?
It was one of my favorite names when I was a teenager. It was quite popular in the 90s.
Do you think it is usable?
Do you pronounce it shy-ann or shay-ann? I always thought it was shy-ann, but now I'm watching a French/English series and everyone there says shay-ann.

Its tone deaf.
It's alright. It's a name of a picturesque touristy town, and it's in a bunch of songs.
Nobody named Cheyenne is effectively depriving any tribes of their identity.
So I think it's fine to use.
However ... I cannot stand it pronounced "Shy-ann." It's not an -anne name and shouldn't sound like one IMO. Anyway I'm so tired of -anne names.
To me it's "Shy-en" or "Shuh-YEN" and if a person named Cheyenne told me her name is "Shy-ann," I'd be like, "OK, Shy-En!"
"Shay-en"would be okay, I could get used to it, but "shay-ann" ... ah ... how. I feel so disappointed in that.

Not a fan. Don’t care for the sound, want to pronounce it the French way rather than “Shy-Ann” and the implications are uncomfortable.
I actually really love it. The ending in ''ehn'' or ''ahn'' sounds soft and feminine. I know a woman of Peruvian origina named Sayen, which sounds similar to me. Same ending and general construction of the name. It seems to come from the Mapuche language.
Anywho, both Cheyenne and Sayen are beautiful. I don't know if I'd use it for a kid for example, but it's a beautiful name.

Not a name I often think of, but I like it, especially as a masculine name. My first association is the ditzy but lovable character from Superstore and then the Puerto Rican singer Chayanne.
I think it's as usable as Dakota. I've always pronounced it as shy-EN.

It's a beautiful name. I wouldn't feel comfortable using it, but I certainly appreciate it.
I say it sort of like "shy-ENN"; maybe that's wrong! I can see how some would get to the shay-ann pronunciation, and it's not bad.

In English it’s Shy-Ann. It’s not bad but I do think it’s very 90’s. I’ve met a lot of girls and one boy named Cheyenne.
I think it's really pretty, but I think it's kind of dubious to use a name for an indigenous tribe when one doesn't have a meaningful connection to the tribe (and I don't mean even more dubious pretendian connections -- I mean meaningful involvement/tribal enrollment/etc.)
As a white guy of European descent, I don't see it as useable.
But I do think it's pretty.

I know a young girl named Cheyenne. (Pronounced shy-ann.)
I personally don't like it, but only because of my personal preference. It's absolutely usable! If you still like it, I say go for it.

It's one of the few Indian names that are actually popular with both Indians (of all affiliations) and other ethnicities.
I think it's attractive. Certainly better than Dakota.
I've never heard it any other way than Shy-Ann.

It was one of my first favorite names that I can remember! Though I've grown away from it since, and it's not even on my PNL. I do agree people without a connection to the tribes should probably not be using these names. I pronounced it (and the one girl I knew named Cheyenne pronounced it) shy-ann.
I've always loved the name and thought it was very pretty. But yeah, there's that connection to the Native American tribe.
I think it’s extremely weird to give someone the name of a Native American tribe, especially if they’re not Native, so I’m not a fan. I also don’t think it’s an attractive sound for a name, anyway; it sounds like you’re describing someone named Anne as shy.
Yes, it is still usable I think. But I'm surprised it's still charting!
Shy-ann
It used to be one of my favorite names, and when I was younger I thought that naming a daughter Mary Cheyenne would be so sweet. I also had a friend in middle school named Cheyenne.
My 2 main associations are both from songs: George Strait's "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" and "The Beaches of Cheyenne" by Garth Brooks. Both super sad songs, but my dad played both on his guitar when I was a kid, so that's why I like Cheyenne so much. I wouldn't use it today, but it's still a favorite of mine, and definitely one of the best place names.

It's fine but not my favorite.
It's OK. Almost everyone in the USA would pronounce this as "Shy", not "Shay", though, and I think "Shy Anne" is a somewhat unfortunate connotation here.
I am also very old and so always first think of this as a male name because of the 1955-1962 television Western "Cheyenne", whose male hero was called Cheyenne Bodie. I realize the huge majority of real life Americans with this name are female. I don't think I've ever met one in person though I do know a Cheyenna.
