Beauharnios
In tracing my ancestors one, a woman was called Beauharnios Oddie born in 1828. It seems to be a French name but all I can find is a college in Quebec Canada. Does anyone know where this came from and how is it pronounced.

Beauharnios doesn't sound French to me, but I'm in Quebec. Which College? More French sounding is Beauharnois...
Beauharnois is a city / town in Quebec

Thanks for the site but unfortunately I don't know French. There is a date of 1838 which I plesume was when it was started so she or her father or mother could not have attend there as she was born in 1828.
Also they lived in oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, England which is very remote from Canada.
I am beginning to think her Father James Oddie went over to France possible during the napoleonic wars and brought the name back but he did not realise that it was a surname not a first name as in Charles de Beauharnois the founder of the Quebec college.
I need to do a lot more research.

Try . . .. . . researching the history of the college and of your family in tandem. Was the college in existence when the ancestor was named? Who or what was the college named after? Did anyone in your family attend the college?Hope that helps :-)I agree with Miss Claire about Oddie, it could be a nickname for any of these:Odalis / Odalys
Odelia
Odessa
Odetta / Odette
Odila / Odile
Odilia

Dear Christine
I have now got a web site for the college but it's in French will have to see if there is an English version.
Oddie is not a nick name it is a surname. Beauharnios married my great great grandad and they lived in Oswaldtwiste in Lancashire, England so I don't think they would have gone to the college if it existed.
As she was born in 1828 it is more likeley her father James Oddie went over to France, possible during the Napolionic wars and brought the name back.Josephine was called Beauharnais, her surname, but the college in Canada is Beauharnios, which still sounds like a surname so possible he heard it but didn't realise it was not a firstname.

Beauharnios and Oddie don't sound French, unless Beauharnios is a misspelling of Beauharnais, but Beauharnais is a surname... http://www.napoleonguide.com/josephine.htm
Oddie could be a pet form of Odile.
