Since it's a biblical (Hebrew) name like
Michael
, and not a French one like
Michelle
, it should logically be a K sound and in English it sounds exactly like
Michael
, which is probably one reason for its rarity.

As far as I know
Michal
Does not sound like
Michael
.
I have a friend named
Michal
. She pronounces it
Me-Chal
the "CH" is raspy like in Chanukah.

...probably pronounced in an unladylike guttural/expectorant fashion, to quote
Phyllis
:)
